  4. Daily Schedule

  5. My Expectations • My expectations for my students: • Try their best each and every day • Listen and follow all directions the first time • Be respectful to all of our classmates and to the teacher • Practice reading and math each and every day • Have fun learning!

  6. Campus discipline plan • Rules: • Respect others rights and property by words and actions. • Follow directions. • Demonstrate proper conduct in all school areas. • Weekly Conduct Grade • E= 0-1 conduct marks • S= 2-4 conduct marks • N= 5-6 conduct marks • U= 7 or more conduct marks *There is a grade given each week for conduct and it will be listed on the progress reports and report cards.

  7. Attendance • It is very important that all students are here every day and on time. • Please do not pull your student out early if at all possible. We are learning every minute of the day and a lot is missed by pulling your student out early. *Early outs without a Doctors’ note disqualifies students from receiving a Perfect Attendance certificate, • All students must provide an excuse note within three days of the absence or it will be considered unexcused. • Any transportation changes should be sent in writing (not email) the day of the change. • Last minute changes should be called into the office to assure that all students get home correctly. • Please do not leave transportation changes on my voicemail. I do not check my voicemail during instructional time.

  8. Help us protect and value the instructional time students receive while on campus by avoiding truancy: tardies, absences, early-outs, unless students are ill. AFFECTS OUR SCHOOL RATING/ DISTINCTIONS EARNED CAMPUS GOAL: 98%

  9. Home-school communication • Green folders are sent home daily. • Please check daily for your child’s conduct grade and notes sent home. • Reading folders will be sent home every day. • Please practice reading with your child every night. • See the list in your child’s reading folder for questions to ask your child before, during, and after reading (coming home soon). • After reading with your child, please sign the reading log. • Return reading folders the next day as we will often be starting a new book.

Reader’s workshop • HMH Reader’s Workshop is a program that we will use to help with our reading skills. • It consists of the following parts: • Guided Reading- reading groups based on ability with the teacher • Read- Aloud with Accountable Talk- stories read aloud and discussed with the students using specific skills (inferencing, predicting, making connections, etc.) • Beach Read- books read aloud for fun • Word Work- phonics lesson taught daily and spelling practice (test given on Friday) • Shared Reading- weekly poems read and discussed (setting, theme, characters, vocabulary, grammar) • Reading Workshop w/ Independent Reading- daily lesson taught on a reading skill and then the students practice the new skill with independent reading time

  12. Accelerated Reading • Accelerated Reading is an incentive based computer program that we use to test a student’s reading comprehension. • Students will have the opportunity throughout the day to test on previously read books. • Each student’s goal is individually assigned specific to his/her reading level range for each 9 weeks (test must be passed with 80% accuracy to earn points). • At the end of each 9 weeks, there will be an AR celebration for those students meeting their goal. • We will send home point updates at progress report and report card time.

  13. HMH Writer’s workshop • It is based upon the same principles as Reader’s Workshop. • We will have Writer’s Workshop daily with independent time to write. • Sample Units: Realistic Fiction, How-to, Poetry • At the end of each unit, we will select one story and “publish” it. • Example: • Whole group lesson- students are taught a writing skill • Shared Writing- we write a story together using the new skill • Independent practice- students practice writing stories using the new skill • Share Time- class comes back together to share and discuss our writing samples.
