Chapter 1: Bilbo Baggins is a merry little hobbit, a hobbit is a small humanoid with thick hair on their feet and curly hair. He lives in a beautiful hobbit-hole in the town of Hobbiton. An old man with grey robes, a grey hat and a wood walking stick. He introduced himself as Gandalf, and asked Bilbo to come on a adventure and Bilbo refuses. Before Gandalf leaves he carves a symbol in Bilbo’s beautiful green door. Soon Thorin & Company, a group of 13 dwarves appear on Bilbo’s doorstep and Gandalf too. After 2 meals it was decided that Bilbo was coming on the adventure and he was their burglar, a sneaky thief who steals treasure.
Chapter 2/3: The next morning Bilbo woke up late for the meeting. He forgot his handkerchiefs and his pipe, he had to run all the way to Bywater. Thankfully Gandalf met them with all Bilbo’s belonging that he needed. They all got ponies, except Gandalf who got a white horse. They rode forward all day until dusk when they stopped to have another meal, Balin there look out saw a light on hill and Bilbo being the burglar was sent to scout out the light. Hobbits have a talent of walking silent in the woods. Bilbo sees 3 trolls sitting around a fire he tries to pickpocket one but the wallet speaks giving Bilbo away, the trolls captured Bilbo and the dwarves went looking for him only to be captured also. Gandalf distracts the trolls and scares them away rescuing Bilbo and the dwarves. They followed the trolls path to a cavern, there they collected elvish make weapons and armor as well as gold and silver which they buried and decided to reclaim it after their adventure. They traveled on to Rivendell where they met elves and their chief Elrond, elves are merry folk who are annoyingly silly. They rested and were fed, their clothes and bruises mended. Elrond was wise, he gave them advice on their adventure, and read the runes on the swords and armor confirming that they were infact elv-ish make. Also he found moon letters on their map directing them on how to open a secret passage into the lonely mountain. They continued on their travels.
Chapter 4: The party has reached the mountains rough terrain, during a thunderstorm. They hid under a sheet of rock but the wind blew the rain right into their shelter. Fili and Kili were sent to find better shelter, and they came back and led the group into a dry cave with a solid back wall. They slept and Bilbo had a horrible dream that the back wall opened into a crack and the ponies were being taken through. Bilbo awoke and it was true his dream was real. He let out a yelp and everyone woke up but goblins jumped out and out numbered them 6 to 1. Gandalf let out a flash of light and 2 goblins dropped dead, he disappeared. The dwarves and Bilbo were led to the goblin king, the king almost set them free but one of the servants saw that Thorin wielded Orcrist the goblin cleaver. They were ordered dead, all the fires and lights went out and piercing white sparks flew among the goblins. A sword flashed its own light and went right through the goblin king. Gandalf grabbed his sword and Orcrist and he led them out through a tunnel. They were chained together so Bombur carried Bilbo, but Bilbo fell off and rolled down and down. He hit his head and it went black.
Chapter 5: Bilbo wakes up in a very dark place, he feels around and finds a tiny ring. Bilbo sits in the corner for a while wanting to smoke his pipe he searches his pockets he finds his dagger glows dimly, and that he no matches to light his pipe. He went through some tunnels in the direction he though was right until suddenly he walked into water. A strange creature, Gollum comes towards Bilbo on his little boat and offers to play riddles. If Bilbo wins Gollum will show him the way out of the mountain, if Gollum wins he gets to eat Bilbo. Bilbo does win and before they leave Gollum wants to show Bilbo his precious, a ring. Gollum suspects Bilbo has taken it and chases after him but Gollum can’t see him because the ring made him invisible. He takes the tunnels almost all the way out then stops right in front of Bilbo. Bilbo leaps over him and runs and run until he reaches the goblins. The Goblins can see him Bilbo wonders if he lost the ring but it was in his pocket, he puts it on and the goblins close the door which leads out of the mountain. He doges the goblins and reaches the door, its almost open enough for him to squeeze through and he makes it but all his buttons popped off. He ran from shadow to shadow tell the Goblins went back to the mountain.
Chapter 6/7: Bilbo wanders on and sees the dwarves and Gandalf, he takes his ring off in front of the and gives the quite a startle. Bilbo was appraised as a very good burglar, and told the of his adventures after he lost the apart from the ring of course. The dwarves and Bilbo were bruised and starving but they trudged forwards for days, on one nightfall they heard wolves they heard wolves howling and scurried up a couple of trees. The Wargs appeared in the clearing and Goblins joined the, Gandalf sent sparks upon them and their fur caught fire but that didn’t hold them for long. The Lord of the Eagles and his followers arrived just as the foot of the trees were set a blaze and the eagles took the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf to a wide shelf made of rock, the other eagles took care of the goblins and Wargs. Gandalf and the Lord of the eagles made arrangements for the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf to be dropped off in the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf to be dropped off in the plains below. But first they ate and slept. Gandalf tells the dwarves and Bilbo that he plans to leave them soon. Gandalf takes then to a shape-shifter named Beorn. Gandalf introduces the two at a time every 5 minutes so that Beorn does not lose his temper. Beorn provides them with ponies (a horse for Gandalf), supplies, food and rest. The next evening they set out from Beorn’s. At the edge of the Wild Gandalf left them with an important piece of advice, don’t leave the path.
Chapter 8: The wild was dark and filled with lots of huge unusual animals. They traveled for days until they came upon a river, they threw a rope and hooked a boat. They pulled the boat back and forth carrying them across, as the last two Dwalin and Bombur were going across a flying deer thing jumped across startling the and Bombur fell in when they finally hauled him out he was asleep and wouldn’t wake up, and them had to carry him for days. To see how far they had progressed Bilbo climbed a tree and peaked his head above the leafy roof, he saw beautiful huge black butterflies and that they were not far off the edge of the forest. That night Bombur woke telling them about his dream of a huge feast but did not remember anything since they first started the adventure. The dwarves and Bilbo left the path to follow fires and perhaps food, when they get close the dwarves are captured by spiders, except Bilbo. Bilbo wearing his ring finds the dwarves, he kills some spiders with his sword which he names sting. The dwarves were put in a sleep-like trance much like Bombur was bound in spider web. Bilbo cuts them free and the dwarves head in one direction. Bilbo leads the spiders away in another saying insults like attercop. The dwarves and Bilbo meet again but Thorin has been captured by wood elves.
Chapter 9/10: The other dwarves were soon captured by wood elves also. Bilbo waited for days for the right opportunity, the chief of guards passed out from being drunk. Bilbo took his keys and released the dwarves and put them in wine barrels which get sent down the river which ends very near the lonely mountain, he returns the keys and rides one of the barrels to Lake town. As they floated along, eventually Bilbo could see the lonely mountain. The river rushed into lonely lake, the barrel raft was pulled a shore and left while the men ate dinner. Bilbo let the dwarves out they complained about being cramped in barrels and soaked but they thanked Bilbo. They walked into Lake town, Thorin introduced himself as the grandson of The King under the Mountain. They explained to the master of Lake town that they were wrongly captured by the elven king and planned to go to the Lonely mountain to defeat Smaug. The Master provided them with a house to themselves and plenty of supplies, they set out the next morning in 3 ships, horses, ponies and provision (guards) from Lake town.
Chapter 11/12: They were escorted tell the dwarves and Bilbo left the boat, the escorts and provisions refused to stay so close to the lonely mountain. The dwarves and Bilbo climbed the mountain slow but sure, they reached the western passage but couldn’t open the door. Bilbo sat there gloomily watching the moon just slip into the sky and there on the grey stone was a thrush cracking a snail against the rock. Bilbo called to the dwarves, they hurried over and pushed the stone over, Thorin pushed the key in to a small hole it fit and turned. They all pushed the rock door and in swing in. Bilbo went in first, Balin followed him half way then wished him good luck and stopped. Bilbo put his ring on and kept going tell the tunnel turned into a opening and there Smaug lay, a red-gold, dragon fast asleep. Under him were piles of gold, silver and jewels. Bilbo grabbed a goblet and scurried out to the dwarves. Smaug awoke and saw his cup missing, Bilbo, Balin Fili and Kili went inside the tunnel but the others had to pull up Bofur and Bombur. They had just gotten inside as the dragon came from the North. They waited as Smaug unleashed his wrath on the mountain side. Smaug crept back into his lair and there Bilbo spoke with him hiding in the shadows. Bilbo tricks Smaug into showing him his underbelly, there was missing armor just over Smaug’s heart. Bilbo calls himself barrel rider so Smaug takes vengeance on Lake town.
Chapter 13: The dwarves and Bilbo waited in that tunnel for what felt like days. Finally they tried to open the door, but it was blocked with broken rock. So they went down to Smaug’s cave but without Smaug’s glow it is too dark to see so Oin and Gloin retrieve tinderboxes from their packs. Bilbo searched around the cave and more of Dale he climbed the mountain of silver and gold Smaug uses as a bed, he sees the beautiful arkenstone and decided it would make a nice reward. In one of the halls a bat spooks him and drops his torch and the fire goes out, the dwarves had to go get poor Bilbo. Together they searched the rest of Dale. They climbed up through the great chamber of Thror and started following the running river to Smaug’s front door step, they saw the sun and valley. They felt a cold breeze but they were hungry and decided to march 5 hours to the south-west post. They rested in the rock-chamber but they couldn’t help but wonder where Smaug was.
Chapter 14: Smaug was coming for Lake town, they shot at him with arrows but his armor was to strong, Smaug breathed fire circling around and soon trees, roofs and wood poles caught flame, no water how much water they poured. Women, children and even the master fled in boats. The captain of the archers was Bard, a descendent of Girion Lord of dale. A thrush (bird) landed on his shoulder and told him to shoot Smaug in the heart where a patch of armor was gone. So Bard sent his favorite black arrow flying into Smaug’s heart. Bard became the new master and the old one died in the dessert of starvation. The elven King came to Lake town to help retrieve the riches from the Lonely mountain. Together they marched forth towards the Mountain.
Chapter 15: The old thrush came back to Bilbo and the dwarves, they tried to understand the bird but they weren’t able to. The thrush got a raven that one of the dwarves can speak with, the raven informs them of Smaug’s death. They celebrate but the raven warns them about the humans and elves coming to take the treasure. Thorin orders them to build a wall at the main gate and wait for Bard and the Elves. Bard tells them of Smaug’s death and asks for a share in the wealth to repair Lake town, Thorin refuses claimed its his inheritance. Bard gives Thorin some time to consider but again Thorin refuses. The elves and human plan an attack. Bilbo was very upset about this turn of affairs and over hears Thorin saying the only thing he would trade the gold for was the arkenstone.
Chapter 16/17: Thorin continues to search for the Arkenstone and the rest of the dwarves worry about the arrival camped on their doorstep. Bilbo takes matter into his own hands, he sneaks away in the night and gives the arkenstone to Bard in hopes of clearing this whole thing up. On his way back Bilbo runs into Gandalf, who congratulates him on his brave deeds. Bard again asks Thorin for a share of the wealth and again Thorin refuses but this time Bard shows Thorin the Arkenstone and Bilbo admits to giving it to them. Thorin is about to be violent when Gandalf reveals himself and sticks up for Bilbo. Thorin lets Bilbo go with the humans and elves. But Thorin has 500 dwarves coming to his aid and plans to take the Arkenstone by force. The dwarves, elves and men are about to begin battle but Wargs and Goblin come to the fight and the dwarves, elves and men join forces to defeat them. This battle was called the Battle of Five Armies. A flying rock hits Bilbo on the head and loses consciousness.
Chapter 18/19: Bilbo awake lying on the side of the mountain, a man is sent to find him. The battle is over they won. Bilbo has to say goodbye to Thorin who's on his death bed and asks for Bilbo’s forgiveness for being greedy. Gandalf was delighted to find Bilbo alive. Fili and Kili also died but the rest survived. Gandalf explains the end of the battle the eagles and Beorn arrived and saved the battle. Bard gives Bilbo a handsome sum for his troubles. Bilbo and Gandalf leave to go home, Beorn tags along tell they went to his house. Gandalf and Bilbo stop in Rivendell and Bilbo sleeps for 2 nights.
