This project, funded through Florida International University and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, aims to evaluate the impacts of arsenic leaching from CCA-treated wood in different environmental samples. The research includes laboratory and field evaluations, deck and marine dock sampling, and method development for arsenic speciation. The study involves a CCA-Treated Deck Study at the University of Miami to assess arsenic species migration rates through soil, with a focus on arsenic concentrations in rainwater runoff and infiltration. The experiment also includes soil column studies to measure arsenic concentrations over time. The findings will provide valuable insights into the environmental impacts of CCA-treated wood.

Funded through Florida International University National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences Impacts from CCA-Treated Wood Within Marine and Terrestrial Environments
Specific Aims • Evaluate the impacts of arsenic from CCA-treated wood by measuring the species of arsenic that are leached from different environmental samples. • Develop methods for arsenic speciation in the particulate phase.
Research Design and Methods • Laboratory Evaluation (Phase I) • Method Development (Myron) • Leaching Experiments/Soil Column (Bernine) • Data Evaluation • Field Evaluation (Phase II) • Deck Sampling (Bernine) • Marine Dock Sampling (Yong) • Data Evaluation

Leachate Collection Systems rainwater runoff percolating rainwater
Percolating Rainwater Collection System 2-way valve
Leachate Collection Systems • Analyze for arsenic species • Rainwater runoff data – estimate how much arsenic & rate of leaching from deck to soil • Percolating rainwater – arsenic migration rate through soil
Total As(V) As(III) Arsenic Concentration (mg/L) CCA-Treated vs Untreated Deck Untreated <0.01 mg/L
Results After From Nine Rain Events (Sept 16th – Nov. 25th) • Total Rainfall – 16 inches • Untreated Deck • - Rainwater Runoff - <0.01 mg/L • Rainwater Infiltration - < 0.01 mg/L • CCA-Treated Deck • - Rainwater Runoff - ~ 1.25 mg/L • Rainwater Infiltration - < 0.01 mg/L
