  1. A Verb: expresses an action, states that something exists, or links the subject to its description.

  2. Action verbs express action – something you can do! For example: Write Eat Cry Play Write two more examples on your worksheet.

  3. Find the action verb in these sentences& write them on line 2 of your worksheet. The girl jumped over the first hurdle. The horse bolted across the field. John drank the lemonade slowly.

  4. A sentence cannot exist without a verb. There are one word sentences. For example: Run! Go! Sit! Write an example on your worksheet.

  5. Helping verbs help action/main verbs express precise shades of meaning. Common helping verbs are: Can Could Shall Should Will Would Has Have Had Do Does Did May Might Must Fill in the blanks on your worksheet.

  6. The combination of one or more helping verbswith an action/main verb is called a verb phrase. For example: Strong verbs can make your writing powerful. Action verbs are often accompanied by helping verbs. Linking verbs should be memorized.

  7. Find the helping verbs in these sentences & write them on line 6 of your worksheet. Nick will eat meatballs for dinner tonight. Elizabeth had gone to the library. Mr. Walters did swim last night in the lake. May we have some more hot dogs?
