  1. WP5Application Support Marco Verlato (INFN-Padova) EU-India Grid Kick-off Meeting, 18-20 October 2006, Trieste, Italy

  2. WP5 Resources and Objectives • Portingthe selected applications to EU-India Grid Infrastructure • Use the selected applications to validate the EU-India Grid • Evaluate and support the porting of “additional” new applications(relevant for eScience/Industry collaboration between EU and India)

  3. WP5 Tasks (1/2) • T5.1: HEP Applications(INFN/7, SAHA/37, TIFR/8, BARC) • focus on ALICE and CMS applications (already “gridified” in EGEE) • BARC, SAHA and TIFR involved in both GARUDA and DAE Grid, and setting up Tier 2/3 centres for ALICE and CMS • T5.2: Biology Applications(CAM/8.5, NCBS/37) • high-performance simulation software for systems biology to be ported on grid • heavy computational and data loads, and access to large biochemical databases required • supercomputing facility available at NCBS since 2003 • Cambridge eScience Centre hosts a EGEE/GridPP site, supports the local PDN Department collaborating with NCBS

  4. WP5 Tasks (2/2) • T5.3: Condensed matter physics (ICTP/12, PUNE/35) • Quantum simulations of extended systems (up to few hundred atoms) with large I/O and tightly coupled parallelism  not trivial to port on the grid • Classical molecular dynamic simulations, less demanding in term of portability on the grid • ICTP involved in EGEE via E-Grid project (grid for finance), andUniversity of Pune is a node of GARUDA grid • T5.4: Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (CDAC/5, ICTP/7) • Seismic acoustic modelling for oil exploration and earthquake prone structures • Use heterogeneous HPC resources geographically distributed for regional atmosphere/ocean models and global forecast models

  5. WP5 Deliverables

  6. WP5 Milestones & Metrics • M18 - Demonstration of applications running on the intercontinental infrastructure (at WP6 organised events)

  7. Network Middleware Users Promotion WP3: Network Planning and Support WP5: Applications WP6: Dissemination WP4: Pilot infrastructure operational support 5.1: EGEE applications (ALICE, CMS) 6.5: EU-India GRID Portal Development & Mantainance 4.2: Define and implement the security and authentication framework 5.2: Biology applications 4.1: Define the deployment strategy for Indian Grids and deploy Key services 4.3: Study and deployment of Advanced Services 3.2: Network Support 5.3: Condensed matter Physics applications 6.1: Promotion & Dissemination Activities 5.4: Earth and Atmospheric Sciences 4.4: Promote the development of existing and new grid Infrastructures in India 6.2: International workshops 3.1: Network connectivity plan 6.4: Follow-up activities 6.3: Training Events • WP2: Building an eScience Network Community 2.1: Identifying researchers & RTD performers interested in Grid infrastructures 2.3: Relationships with other Projects 2.4: Sustainable Actions 2.2: Identifying industries, SMEs & international performers interested in Grid Infrastructures WP5 interdependences with other WPs

  8. WP5 work plan • Identify WP5 people, collect contacts and set up a core team • Activity strongly dependent from WP4 outcome cannot be passive and wait for having the pilot in place, contribution to WP4 needed • 1st deliverable with the application requirements dueby end of December (useful link at https://savannah.cern.ch/support/?group=egeeptf) • 1-3 December WLCG-Tier2 workshop at Mumbai, tutorials on both gLite services and LHC application deployment, and a good chance to have a face to face meeting
