Amendments • A constitutional amendment is a formal change to the text of the written constitution of a nation or state. • Article Five of the Constitution describes the process whereby the Constitution may be altered. • An amendment can be proposed by (1) a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress or (2) a national convention called by Congress at the request of two thirds of the state legislatures. (This second method has never been used.) An amendment must be ratified, or approved, by (1) three fourths of the state legislatures or (2) special conventions in three fourths of the states. Congress decides which method will be used.

Find Your OwnCreate Your Own • Your task is to read the list of constitutional amendments and to choose 5 that you believe directly affect your life (or will in the very near future) and to label them by number and draw an image that represents that amendment. You can only choose 3 from the “Bill of Rights” (first 10 amendments) • Next you must create an amendment that you believe The Constitution does NOT have. You will label it “The 28th Amendment.” You will write a short 3-5 sentence that explains your amendment and draw an image that represents it.
