  2. Modern Taxonomy Systematics-Classifying organisms and their evolutionary relationships  connects phylogeny and taxonomy

  3. Systematics based on: • Fossils (but record can be incomplete) • Morphology = study of form and structure • Genes • Molecular evidence

  4. Looks at homologous structuresfrom divergent evolution or common ancestry • Must distinguish between homologous and analogous structures before constructing phylogenies.

  5. Phylogenetic Trees = a family tree that shows the evolutionary relationships among groups of organisms

  6. Provides a hypothetical visual representation of the findings from systematics • All trees are subject to change as new information is gathered

  7. Cladistics = the study of how species may be grouped together based on shared characteristics • Patterns of shared characteristics can be depicted in a diagram called a cladogram.
