This project aims to evaluate the performance of the Flexible Irrigation Platform (FIGARO) in enhancing water productivity at farm scale. Various assessment tools will be developed to measure internal consistency, user satisfaction, and operational flexibility. The assessment will focus on economic and environmental indicators, including net present value, water saving, energy efficiency, and platform functionality. Different stakeholders' perspectives will guide the assessment process to ensure comprehensive evaluation. Key performance indicators will be defined, and assessment methods will be developed in collaboration with project partners.

FIGARO WP7 Assessment WP status & planning June 4 2013
Stated goals WP Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Objectives • to develop and adapt assessment tools to appropriately evaluate the FIGARO platform • to assess FIGARO Platform performance on a number of levels.
Assessing DSS Slide3 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Assessing decision supporttool • Internal consistency verification • Empirical quality validation • User satisfaction in operating tool
So, what to assess • Issues • - Verification • Attractiveness / relevance information GUI • Operability GUI (ease of use / qualifications) • Flexibility for plugging in DSSs / models / data • Reference • - uManage, Aquasafe, … Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity
So, what to assess • Additional issues • validity models / sensor data / forecasts • trust of users in models / data / forecasts • - projected benefits recommended actions for users • power to convince to adopt recommendation • Reference • growers experience / insight • current operation Slide5 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity
Assessment inside / outside platform? Slide6 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity
Assessment inside / outside platform? Slide7 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity object to be assessed instrument to assess • Independent assessments are stronger (empirical evidence + expert-models + literature validate adopted model) • Validation ‘just’ using empirical data can do (validation strategy required modest claims should be acceptable)
Assessment indicators Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Relevant indicator themes • Economic performance of farm • Environmental performance of farm / catchment • Platform use Different users, stakeholders will require / request different assessment indicators, or use other definitions Sources: FAO, IWMI, ICID, Safir, Figaro partners
Economic performance Under uncertainty: link to uncertainty management strategy user ‘risk avoidance’: forecast benefit vs marginal or small but relevant potential damage (user self-characterization) underlying primary / secondary data ? • Today, no irrigation is necessary, because • sensor says soil is still wet • model says it will rain Slide9 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Net Present Value Gross return on investment investment intensity / O&M cost intensity payback time Economic water / land productivity Irrigation efficiency, energy efficiency Water / energy /nutrient / labour saving Energy dependency Yield increase will be delivered by UniBo / data Aquacrop + UPVLC
Environmental performance Slide10 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Water saving Reduction in water scarcity, other externalities Water productivity / water footprint (blue, green) Land productivity Reductions in nutrient leaching, salinization Energy saving will be delivered by UT, UPVLC, C-Tech scale: farm + potential larger scales
Platform use Slide11 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Appropriateness of functionality Required skills for usage / ease of use Flexibility to plug in models / data / forecasts Flexibility to put in user preferred operations / strategies Robustness / durability of platform (/ system?) Accuracy of actual operation and impacts compared to controls and projections will have to be defined, with WP 8,9, UT, UniBo, … involved scale: farm
Tasks / deliverables Slide12 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Task 7.1 Define key performance indicators (KPI) and benchmarks for performance assessment and indication of success. (M1-M6) • (UT, C-Tech, UNIBO, UPVLC, Netafim, IIT, CER, FAO,IST, Eden) • Status: Draft report accomplished; closure as anticipated still requiring finalizing steps.
Tasks / deliverables Slide13 Flexible and precIse irriGation plAtform to improve faRm scale water prOductivity Task 7.1 Define key performance indicators (KPI) and benchmarks for performance assessment and indication of success. (M1-M6) • Upcoming activities complete detailed definition indicators required data matching sources (+ defaults) benchmarks stakeholder priorities questionnaire iteration + collecting responses (WP8)
