  2. How do you help the community while experiencing the same challenges in your own organization? Challenge

  3. 3 stores, 4 donation centers, closed for various periods of time • Main Campus evacuated for 5 days including programs for developmentally disabled and seniors (220 clients) and 200 employees, 67 employees left homes • $200,000 unreimbursed financial loss from supporting material distribution effort in community (trailers, processing, temp employees) • Revenue and income impact from reduced sales, 3 day exclusion deductible on business interruption The Impact on Goodwill

The people who were evacuated: • $72,100 in vouchers issued to 3,270 people (Waldo) • Given choice in replacement item needs • Vouchers, same as cash • Speed of voucher delivery -dedicated full-time staff at County Disaster recovery site • Convenience -multiple store locations • Multiplier effect of gently used items at very low prices • The clients we serve: • All clients/or caregivers were contacted and back-up plan enacted • Our client transportation system was uninterrupted • Clients without available family were transported to safety • Relocated all clients within 24 hours with programming we relocated to an empty school building or other GW sites Our Impact on the Community

Generous material donations from community • People served better (choice, multiplier effect, locations) • Voucher access -3 days from fire start • Collection/transportation systems immediately scaled up • “Cloud” network and apps and back-up Denver servers enabled full tech/payroll for 1200 employees • Main mission to existing clients has less funding because cash used for emergency mission • Not a disaster relief organization so no consumer financial donations • Public relations challenge- lack of understanding of system of distributing donations • Store system not sufficient to handle furniture needs Meeting Community Needs: What went Right and Wrong?

Issued $79,400 of vouchers to 1,781 people (fewer people but higher dollars, fewer insured in Black Forest than Waldo Canyon fires, more furniture) • Only impact to Goodwill operations was short term closure of Monument ADC • Financial Impact to Goodwill- we received no monetary assistance and very few material donations Black Forest

  7. Move all furniture donations to one warehouse (waited too long to do this) • Ask for financial assistance from other organizations • Use gift cards to enhance dignity • Have multiple back-ups plans for alternate client service locations • Have larger back-up site for administrative employees in order to continue our established mission Lessons Learned
