Team building • Requires management of personalities • Requires knowing how each person thinks and how to utilize their competencies
5 Stages of Team Development • Forming • Storming • Norming • Performing • Transforming
Forming • Tasks: • Establish base level expectations • Identify similarities • Agree on common goals • Behaviors: • Making contact and bonding • Developing trust • Members dependent
Storming • Tasks: • Identifying power and control issues • Gaining communication skills • Identifying resources • Behaviors: • Expressing differences of ideas, feelings, and opinions • Reacting to leadership • Members independent or counter-dependent
Norming • Tasks: • Members agree about roles and processes for problem-solving • Behaviors: • Decisions are made through negotiation and consensus building
Performing • Tasks: • Achieve effective and satisfying results • Members find solutions to problems using appropriate controls • Behaviors: • Members work collaboratively • Members care about each other • Group establishes a unique identity • Members are independent

Be aware of how you work • Evaluate yourself and look at areas you can improve • Hold yourself accountable to change your approach if necessary • Lead from a position of strength and respectability • Be your own boss • Be flexible • Know who you are as a leader
