After years of protests and distrust between colonists and the British questions arose about who should be able to impose taxes • The colonists thought that their local governments should impose tax not the British King • If they were taxed they wanted a direct say in their government Taxes Who has the right?
Military Action Britain sent four regiments of troops into the heart of Boston These troops were often rude and even violent Small fighting broke out between Bostonians and the redcoats (British troops) These tensions led to the Boston Massacre
Boston Massacre • March 5, 1770 • Bostonians marched through the streets carrying weapons • The redcoats fired and killed 5 colonists • Many mysteries surround this event – details remain unknown • This was used as a rallying cause for hatred against Britain
Propaganda • After the Massacre, published writings and illustrations turn even more against the British. • Some of these publications intentionally bent the truth in order to help the colonists cause for independence. • With support from the people of the colonies, American independence was just around the corner.
