2. WELCOME Parents and Families! • Thank You for coming to today’s presentation on our new OMSD Standards-Based Student Achievement Report: SB SAR • Meeting Objectives • Familiarize parents with the new report card format • Introduce the new grading system

A Message from the Assistant Superintendent of Learning & Teaching- Mrs. Karla Wells • I am pleased to announce 2012-13 as the official implementation year for the Standards-Based Student Achievement Report (SB SAR) in Ontario-Montclair School District. • The SB SAR will be implemented in grades (Pre) TK-6 • SB SAR will be issued three times per year. • The purpose of the SB SAR is to communicate your child’s progress and effort towards mastery of the California State Standards for each grade level.

The SB-SAR Journey • 18 Committee members • Represented each of the grade levels (K-8) • Members worked on the standards for their grade level • Shared input: Non-committee members and parents • Similar but not identical to current SAR • Same format and marks (PS-8) for consistency • Pre-school use SB-SAR for trimester 3

Advantages of a SB-SAR • Provides a tool to effectively communicate to all invested parties the progress a child is making on mastering the district/state identified essential standards for each grade level • Helps teachers and students focus on standards from the very beginning of the school year identifying standards in which students will need extra support if they are not making adequate progress (RtI2) • Helps ensure consistency of grade level expectations from teacher to teacher

8. Why Change the “OLD” System? • Contains more specific information about your child’s progress towards meeting the required state learning standards in each content area. • The former system did not closely tie to the learning expectations developed by the state on which our curriculum and state assessments are built. • Allows all teachers in OMSD be consistent and fair in reporting progress of student learning against the state standards. • Will give parents and students specific information about what skills and competencies they have mastered and what areas he/she still needs to work on to meet state standards and to be prepared for the next grade level. • The SB-SAR is a reflection of the curriculum that is being taught and assessed in the classroom.

19. Evidence of Mastery • Grading Process & Evidence • Standards-based grading is an evolution of student monitoring but involves many of the same principles of traditional grading systems. Teachers will still collect student work over the course of each trimester. Documentation of a student’s progress is supported by district Benchmark Assessments but also involves a comprehensive review of all standards-based assignments including, but not limited to, the following:

21. How will effort and hard work be recognized? • Teacher comment section on the SB-SAR • Teacher’s comments during the Parent-Teacher Conference. • On-Going Progress Monitoring (e.g. Progress Reports, notes home, student recognition assemblies, etc.)
