  6. Somalia, situated in the Horn of Africa, lies along the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. It is bounded by Djibouti in the northwest, Ethiopia in the west, and Kenya in the southwest. In area it is slightly smaller than Texas. Generally arid and barren, Somalia has two chief rivers, the Shebelle and the Juba.

  7. The people of Somalia The Somali, who are the vast majority of the population, are divided into many clans and subclans. There are Italian, Indian, and Pakistani minorities. Islam is the state religion. Somali is the official language, but Arabic, English, and Italian are in wide use.

  10. The resources of Somalia Pastoralism is the dominant mode of life, and herding (both nomadic and sedentary) of cattle, sheep, goats, and camels is the principal occupation. Livestock, charcoal, bananas, hides, and fish make up the bulk of exports.

  11. The major cash crops are bananas, mangoes, and sugarcane; subsistence crops include sorghum and corn. Processing of raw materials constitutes the bulk of the small industry. The most valuable mineral resource is uranium; many other minerals are largely unexploited. Petroleum deposits have been found, and a refinery was built in 1979. However, much industry has been shut down due to civil strife.

  13. Government • During most of the 1990s there was no central government in Somalia. • Some regional councils formed in 1993 survived into 2000. • All the political power establishing since February, 1991 all didn't meet with international acknowledgement

  14. In August 2000, Somalis met in a representative council in Djibouti and took the first steps toward reestablishing a government for Somalia.

  15. Congratulations~~ • On December 29, 2008, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed announced before a united parliament in Baidoa his resignation as President of Somalia. • On January 31, 2009, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed was elected as president at the Kempinski hotel in Djibouti. • Dangerous and useless……

  17. Relationships with other countries • Ethiopia and Somalia: An uneasy relationship Ethiopia is Somalia’s biggest neighboring country . Theyhad some land problems and fight for it several times. Now,Ethiopia helps Somalia a lot on many aspects.

With People's Republic of China • China and Somalia has diplomatic relation on December 14, 1960. • All the Chinese experts in Somalia came back in 1991,but the two countries kept on communicating. • Somalia would love tocooperate with China • After Somalia’s government established in 2005, China successively provided a helping of certain amount to it.

  19. With United States • During the Cold War period, the United States once was the most important country to help Somalia . • From 1992 to 1994,USA sent some armies to Somalia. Unsuccessful. • After 9.11, Usa thought Somalia had some relationships with the terror organizes. Do something. • Now, Usa believe Somalia has no relationship with the terror organizes and give them some help.

Current issues • Environment - current issues: desertification • Somali pirates: 1.Somalia located at an important position gulf of Aden Gluf of Djibouti connect Indian Ocean and Red Sea Suez Canal 2.live is so poor 3.The cost of being a pirate is low.And there are so many pirates. 4. International don’t do well in control it.

  21. Happened recently • On 4.27, The English navy hands over 6 Somalia pirates toward police in Kenya. • EU decides to send military instructors to train Somalia armies.(4.28)
