  3. The start… • June 2003: CHART RCU set up within the UWI HIV/AIDS Response Programme

  4. Build relationships with regional and international agencies Develop infrastructure Encourage and collate needs assessments Draft work plans Conduct site visits to CHART centres CHART RCU set out to…

  5. Later on…, together with NTCs and I-TECH • Created logo and started to develop website • Began to advertise and facilitate training opportunities inside and outside of the Caribbean

  6. National Training Coordinator (NTC) Meetings • Three NTC meetings so far: • January 2004 • April 2004 • November 2004 (postponed from October due to Hurricane Ivan!)

  7. First National Training Coordinator (NTC) Meetings • NTCs, Regional Coordinating Unit staff and I-TECH colleagues • Get to know one another • Begin exchange of information and ideas • Present training work plan outlines from each Centre • Brainstorm about the future role of CHART • Work on designs for a CHART logo

Second and Third National Training Coordinator (NTC) Meetings • Modify existing training workplans in order to create a regional training strategy • Begin to buy into an M & E approach • Brainstorm re a 5-Year Strategic Plan for the CHART Network. • Discuss the establishment of a Caribbean wide Clinical Review board • Update on TIMS (M & E) and progress of Training Calendar

First meeting of Medical Directors’ of CHART Training Centres - June 2004 • 4 of 5 medical directors attended • Also in attendance - Representatives from: • I-TECH • CDC-GAP • USAID Caribbean Regional Program • UAB • Directors endorsed the role of the CHART RCU, and began discussions about governance

Courses for VCT Providers - BahamasJune 2004, March 2005 • CHART RCU, in collaboration with JHPIEGO • JUNE 2004 • 2 CHART Trainers certified as “VCT Clinical Trainers” • 25 healthcare providers also trained • MARCH 2005 (scheduled) • CHART RCU will sponsor another 30 persons • 15 persons to be certified as to “VCT Clinical Trainers”

  18. CHART BahamasPMTCT+ Workshop • Held January 2005 • Major technical assistance from I-TECH • Logistics and administrative support by the RCU

  19. Caribbean Association of Pharmacists Conference, Belize, Central America • August 15 -22, 2004 • RCU sponsored Miss Vanria Rolle from the Bahamas to facilitate an ARV adherence workshop during the 24th Convention of the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists

  20. “Building Bridges*” Conference (US Embassy/Baptist Health of South Florida) • October 19, 2004, Jamaica • Delegates from Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Jamaica and U.S.A. • RCU • supported CHART Jamaica • sponsored presenter from the Dominican Republic • used HCW data base to recruit participants *The Jamaica:Florida Connection

Clinical Preceptorships • Dr Robert Green, Internist, Kingston Public Hospital, spent one month at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in August 2004. • Dr David McGowan, Internal Medicine resident at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), has completed one month (Jan 2005) at UAB and has started a two-month preceptorship at Les Centres GHESKIO.

Activities • February 2003 • CHART NTCs from Bahamas, Barbados, and Haiti met with CDC-GAP Caribbean liaison in Miami to attend the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AMFAR) annual conference. • June 2003 to November 2004 • 7 members of the CHART Staff; 2 persons from the UWI HARP Coordinating Unit attended a combined total of 12 training courses

Other significant RCU activities • CHART Logo and website development • www.chartcaribbean.org • Building data base of Caribbean health care workers, including potential trainers (on-going) • Some fiscal management • Helping to handle logistics in preparation for meetings • Working with OECS-RCM on a Training plan • Working with JHPIEGO and I-TECH on a modified TIMS database for CHART

"Oral health care providers: Critical role players in the HIV /AIDS epidemic, The Jamaican Experience".
