2. The shootings continue in Chicago, as the death toll climbs to 232 for the year 2013. From Friday to Sunday morning, six have been fatally shot and 17 wounded. One of the victims, 6-year-old Quianna Tompkins, was shot in the chest while attending a vigil. Her mother and father have spoken out against the rampant gun violence. Juannake Kenney, her mother, said at a press conference, “Please, we gotta stop the killing, we have to stop, we have to stop!” Her father, Kenneth Tompkins added: “My child loves life, she enjoys it,” her father Kenneth Tompkins added. “She really gets it. To rob her of that, to attempt to rob her of that, is ridiculous. Something needs to be done about this before somebody else’s child gets shot for no reason.” The other victims include a 52-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and a 28-year-old who had been attending a birthday party. 3. Las Vegas resident Wesley Warren, 48, had a 132-pound scrotum surgically removed at no cost to him. He was desperate to remove the testicles; however, he’s unhappy with the result: his one-inch penis. A team of surgeons in California performed the 13-hour operation for free to remove the excess tissue caused by fluid build up and completely rebuilt his scrotum. He says the procedure has left him “disfigured.” Prior to the surgery, he considered seeking help via eBay to cover his expenses, commenting that he was a “prisoner to his testicles” and had to “take baby steps” when he walked. He had a rare condition that is usually only seen in Asia and Africa. He couldn’t wear regular pants, so he substituted with hoodies to conceal the abnormally large scrotum. 4. A 3-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after falling out of a third-story window while playing Spider-Man with his siblings in Anaheim on Saturday, officials said. The boy landed in a planter three stories below in the 700 block of East South Street (map). He was bleeding from the head and taken to the UC Irvine Medical Center just after 9 p.m., authorities said. “What occurred was he was playing Spider-Man and there was a bed against the wall right against the window,” said Sgt. Wayne Alonso with the Anaheim Police Department. The boy and his siblings were playing on the bed, and he knocked off a window screen and fell through the window, officials said. Saying that “the darkest corners of the Internet” pose a real threat to children, British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday rolled out a plan that would, by default, block pornography on most computers, smartphones and tablets. British wireless and Internet providers have agreed to put adult-content filters on phones, public Wi-Fi networks and home computers in the coming months. By the end of the year, the filters will become the default setting for anyone setting up broadband Internet service at home, Cameron said. “I’m not making this speech because I want to (moralize) or scare-monger, but because I feel profoundly as a politician, and as a father, that the time for action has come,” Cameron said. “This is, quite simply, about how we protect our children and their innocence.” All of those filters could be deactivated by those who can “prove” they are 18 or older, Cameron said. The plan is the result of a monthslong effort by Cameron to restrict access to Internet porn. He has called Google and other search companies into meetings, demanding they do more to hide porn from children, and appointed Parliament member Claire Perry as a special adviser targeting the issues. The plan will require no action from Parliament because service providers and other Web companies are participating voluntarily. Some already provide service with porn filters as their default settings. Not surprisingly, Web freedom advocates and other critics were quick to decry the plan. Robert Griffin III has passed a major test toward his goal of playing in Week 1, getting the go-ahead from the team doctors days before the Washington Redskins open training camp. ”Doctors cleared me to practice. Coach is going to ease me in,” Griffin announced Monday on Twitter. The two sentences represent hurdles past and future. Even though Griffin says he has the medical OK, it is now up to coach Mike Shanahan to determine how often and how vigorously Griffin practices when the Redskins open camp Thursday in Richmond, Va. The Redskins had no comment on Griffin’s tweet. However, a person familiar with the situation said the Redskins have cleared Griffin to practice. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the club has not made an announcement. Still, it seems more likely than ever that Griffin will be under center when the Redskins open the regular season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 9, just eight months after he had reconstructive surgery on his right knee. ”It’s great news,” right guard Chris Chester said. ”I’m really excited about it. 10. A Manhattan banker jumped from the seventh story of his Fifth Avenue apartment Sunday morning, after an argument with his co-op board over his beloved poodles. Adam Silberman, 47, president of an investment group, had his fall broken by a second-story awning, which softened the impact. He remains in intensive care at Weill Cornell Medical Center where he has “multiple trauma” and several broken bones. Silberman’s wife, Monique Ender Silberman, is a successful real estate broker at Town Residential. Silberman’s father-in-law told the New York Post that the banker had been upset about a long-running battle with the co-op board at his building. “It’s horrible what happened,” Silberman’s father-in-law said. “I’ve been praying and crying the whole day.” Silbermans’ poodles had received noise complaints from other residents of their posh apartment building. The poodles also reportedly created disturbances in the building’s lobby. The Silberman’s were facing considerable financial woes before Adam’s jump — the Post reports that they owe $650,000 in state and federal tax liens.
