“ Increasingly, the evidence points to an alarming conclusion: the sea, the cradle of life, may be dying. Can Lotek help? You bet we can. We believe that the animal knows best. We are dedicated to developing advanced equipment and analytical techniques that, when placed on free ranging wild animals and fish, provide the world with the knowledge required to scientifically validate and assess the environment — from the perspective of the animal. ” From a speech given by Jim Lotimer, co-founder and President of Lotek Wireless Inc., at the University of Waterloo on June 7, 1999 Lotek Wireless Inc. Monitoring the Environment from the Animal’s Perspective TELEMETRY: The highly automated communications process by which measurements are made and other data collected at remote or inaccessible points and transmitted to receiving equipment for monitoring, display, and recording. Lotek Wireless’ core purpose is to deliver innovative solutions for a sustainable future. Fish and wildlife around the world are in danger: their food, water, habits and habitats are increasingly disrupted by human activities. Lotek creates technological innovations to protect our environment and its inhabitants. Our systems equip creatures with the means to tell us about their health and the health of their habitats.
We’re passionate about the environment. Lotek is a partnership of engineers, biologists and manufacturers devoted to furthering environmental sustainability. Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future. By equipping fish, birds and animals with biotelemetry devices, we gain new insights into their lives and into the health of the environment. These insights inform the decisions of today’s scientific researchers, resource managers and other stewards of the environment. Lotek furthers environmental sustainability by equipping animals with the means to report back from the wild about their health, their habits, and their habitats.
We succeed through partnerships. With our clients • Our inventions are often a response to their research needs. • Our systems are “field proven” by clients who test our prototypes and beta versions. Within our own team • Biologists, engineers and manufacturers. With many other partners • With governments, schools, consortia, investors, suppliers and other companies Since 1984, Lotek Wireless innovations have been changing the way that biologists track fish and wildlife. What makes our innovations possible? Above all, we attribute our success to our many partnerships:
PARTNERSHIP PROFILES Sustaining the Pacific Northwest Fishery Over 400 dams throughout the Columbia River Basin Most hydroelectrically developed river system in the world Supplies almost half of America’s power Also provides flood control and irrigation to the area’s farmland Stocks of salmon and other fish down to 1-2% of historical levels Billions of dollars spent on environmental research on the Columbia Many dams have now added fish passage systems For over 15 years, Lotek has partnered with many of the Columbia’s federal and state agencies, Public Utilities Districts, native tribes and other stakeholders These partnerships have resulted in some of our most innovative telemetry solutions, e.g., SRX, DRX, DSP, NanoTag These innovations can benefit other dams as well; over 45,000 large dams worldwide
PARTNERSHIP PROFILES Seeing the Big Picture at Queen’s University’s New Ecological Observatory Partners: Lotek, Queen’s University Biological Station, Carleton University, Illinois Natural History Survey (U. of I.) Established Observatory as a centre for exchange between academic and industry experts Pioneer site for international data exchange and analysis Have already gathered 2 years’ worth of daily data on a group of largemouth bass at Warner Lake MAP system captures precise 3-D location & water temperature of each individual bass, every 15 seconds, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year This continuous “data movie” of fine scale interactions provides valuable information to scientists from many different disciplines Intent is to make data available for researchers in other universities and countries to analyze as well
PARTNERSHIP PROFILES Unlocking the Secrets of the Ocean with Dr. Barbara Block Dr. Block is professor in Marine Sciences, Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University & one of the founders of its Tuna Research and Conservation Center Her research investigates how large pelagic fishes utilize the open ocean environment Provided crucial feedback to Lotek about the beta versions of the LTD 2310 archival tag Feedback was instrumental in helping to improve the tag’s sensor stalk, firmware and tag reader software Has pioneered use of LTD 2310 to gain valuable new insights into tuna migration & populations. Revealed that what were previously thought to be two separate schools of tuna, one in the Mediterranean and the other on the east coast of North America, are in fact one single school that migrates across the Atlantic Is using Lotek archival tags to help provide some of the best ocean observation data available in the world today
We design high quality, innovative products. How do you judge the quality of a product? If you’re a wildlife researcher or manager, you know that when it comes to animal monitoring systems, it’s all about the data. Our customers rely on our systems to make informed and often far-reaching decisions about the environment We understand their need for reliable monitoring devices, and work hard to prevent the costly consequences that system failure would incur To create electronics that are simultaneously sensitive and tough, we: • Use software simulations and computational modeling • Apply stringent engineering specifications and industry standards • Calibrate and monitor for quality at each stage of assembly • Perform burn-ins and temperature cycling to expose faults, stabilize components and ensure resilience
TECHNOLOGY PROFILES Radio Radio waves transmit information rapidly and for long distances in air and fresh water Radio biotelemetry uses transmitters to send signals and receivers to detect them Traditionally, different animals’ radio signals were made unique by varying either their frequency or their “beeping” rates • Lotek radio innovations include: • Introduction of the digitally encoded radio tag, allowing detection of hundreds of tags on the same frequency • Miniaturization of radio tags, e.g. NanoTag • Species tracked:Fish, birds, mammals and amphibians of almost any size, from tiny salmon smolts to full-grown elephants • Product examples:Transmitters (Fish): NanoTag, MCFT, MBFT, EMG, & SR sensorsTransmitters (Wildlife): LMRT, SMRCReceivers: SRX 600, SRX 400, STR 1000, DRX 600
TECHNOLOGY PROFILES Acoustic Acoustic signals are used to monitor fish and wildlife in marine (salt water) habitats Sound travels more than 4X faster in water than in air, allowing near real-time listening over long distances Acoustic biotelemetry uses transmitters, receivers and hydrophones • Lotek acoustic innovations include: • MAP System, which uses CDMA coding to allow simultaneous detection of countless unique individuals on a single frequency • Also has ability to discern tags reliably in acoustically noisy environments • Species tracked:Wide variety of marine species, including salmon, trout, plaice, cod, crabs, sea turtles, many others • Product examples:Transmitters: MAP, CAFT, MA sensorsHydrophones: WHS, LHPReceivers: MAP 600, SRX 600, SRX 400
Researchers normally use radio in fresh water, and acoustic in salt or deep water Innovative solution required to track fish that move back and forth between fresh and salt water, or between shallow and deep water “Double-tagging” not always possible, especially for smaller species TECHNOLOGY PROFILES Combined Acoustic & Radio • Lotek innovation: • CART tag — “Combined Acoustic Radio Transmitter” • Sends both types of signal at regular intervals • Digitally encoded signals allows detection of hundreds of tags on same frequency • Product examples:Transmitters: CART, CH sensorsHydrophones: WHS, LHPReceivers: SRX 600, SRX 400, MAP 600
TECHNOLOGY PROFILES Archival Data storage tags sense and record the conditions that they travel through Pressure readings reveal water depth, and light measurements allow calculation of latitude and longitude Can take readings every 4 seconds, collect data for years, & work at depths of 2000 meters and temperatures as low as -5° C • Lotek archival innovations include: • Unsurpassed light sensitivity to ensure accurate geolocation estimates • “Pop-off” mechanism to facilitate recovery • Species tracked:Examples include tuna, salmon, cod, plaice, sharks, sablefish, lake trout, turtles, penguins, albatross and platypuses • Product examples:LTD 1100, LTD 1110, LTD 2350, LTD 2410
