General discussions on the meaning of being a teacher in E.L.T Evren Dağtekin-Öznur Yemez-Arzu Bali-Ceylan Yıldırım
More work has been done on the good language learner recently than on the good language teacher. This reflects the current learner-centeredorthodoxy many teachers subscribe to; autonomy of the learner,self-access work guessing strategies,a more systematic approach to grammar and the importance of using the language for communications, attitudes to the target culture and so on.The profile of the book learner is beginning to emerge.
This is all well and good, but the demands on the teacher in a leaner-centered methodology are greater, paradoxically not less than in convetional teacher-centered approaches. We need to know more about what skills are required of a teacher who wishs to encourage good language learning.
The good language teacher: S/he (is); • One of us • Like an actress; pretends a lot • Uses movements to make meaning clear • Believes in students and makes the students believe in themselves • Gives the students a lot of books to read • Has personality of his/her own • Friendly • Forceful but not strict
Uses questions a lot • Well educated • Tells jokes • Knows how to treat someone who sits at a desk for 6 hours • Lets his/her students do it by themselves • Makes sure everybody understans • Very experinced • Knows psychology, pedegogy…
Please tell your short stories about a bad teacher…
The bad language teacher; • Very strict • Gives Marks all the time • Don’t let the students speak • Always shouts • Gives a lot of tests • Fixed in a chair • Starts the lesson immediately • Just says the lesson and nothing else • There is a distance towards the students
Just shows the students grammer rule • Not prepaired • Sarcastic and ironic • Has a blacklist and says ‘’You,you, you’’ • No communication • Doesn’t discuss the other problems • Very nervous • Shouts when the students make mistakes
How a teacher improves herself; • Ways of improving one’s knowledge of ELT and thereby increasing one’s confidence as a teacher include the following; 1-) Subscribing to ELT magazines and journals. 2-) Joining Professional organizations such as IATEFL and TESOL and attending their conference whenever possible. 3-) Forming local teacher’s groups and holding regular meetings to discuss the common problems 4-) Inviting fellow teachers/teacher trainers and guest speakers to contribute lectures and workshops
5-) Arranging ELT book exhibitions with the help ELT publishers, organisations such as the British Council, or the relevant ministry. 6-) Joining a special-interest group in IATEFL, such as the one on teacher development. 7-) Reading teachers’ Handbooks published by most ELT publishers.
