What are the components of the NSF’s RET Program? RET Teacher Leaders plan the Professional Development RET Teacher Leaders provide RET Teachers and COFSP Fellows with Professional Development on Challenge Based Learning (CBL) and Engineering Design Process (EDP) pedagogies, as well as, Unit design using academic content standards. Professional Development→Unit/Activity Development with ongoing Support Professional Development Component
Professional Development RET Components
What are the components of the NSF’s RET Program? RET Teacher Leaders guide the RET Teachers in creation of a Unit that utilizes CBL and EDP pedagogies. RET Teachers guide the COFSP Fellows in creation of an Activity based on academic content standards that could utilize CBL and EDP pedagogies and incorporate the Capstone Project. Professional Development→Unit/Activity Development with ongoing Support Unit/Activity Development Component
What are the components of the NSF’s RET Program? RET Teacher Leaders support the RET Teachers through the Unit implementation process. RET Teachers guide the COFSP Fellows through the implementation an Activity. COFSP Fellows support the RET Teachers with additional classroom assistance. Professional Development→Unit/Activity Development with ongoing Support Ongoing Support Component
Who are the KEY players in RET? The RET Teacher Leaders who are currently teacher participants in the NSF sponsored program Cincinnati Enhanced Engineering and Math and Science Program (CEEMS Program.) They have extensive experience using CBL and EDP in their own classrooms with students. The RET Teachers are veteran teachers who have applied, and been selected to participate. They have come from districts or schools other than: Cincinnati Public, Oak Hills, Winton Woods, Norwood, Princeton Schools and Clermont County. The Choose Ohio First Scholarship or COFS Fellows aresenior engineering students at UC who have applied for a tuition scholarship and undergone a rigorous selection process in order to support engineering applications in a middle school or high school classroom.
Objectives of RET Encourage teachers to incorporate new pedagogies (CBL and EDP) into their teaching practices. Move science and math classrooms from teacher centered to student centered learning environments. Develop classrooms that include real world applications in the teaching of content. Use engineering applications (A) to convey math and science concepts Encourage students to consider engineering career (C) Show societal impact (S)
Why participate in RET?What are the classroom benefits for your students? Address the declining interest in math and science fields among students. Encourage students to enter the field of engineering because and fill the need for more engineers. Increase entrance of students into science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) careers.
