Egyptian ArtCharacteristics* • Ancient Egyptian art refers to the style of painting, sculpture, crafts and architecture developed by the civilization in the lower Nile Valley from 3100 BC to 30 AD.* • Paintings and sculptures were both highly stylized and symbolic.* • Hieroglyphics was written in symbols and pictures instead of letters and words.* • Papyrus texts illustrate all dimensions of ancient Egyptian life and include literary, religious, historical and administrative documents.*

  3. Paintings* • Ancient Egyptian artists decorated temples and tombs. * • Scenes from the person buried in the tomb were intended to remind the spirit of life on earth.*

  4. Architecture* • Ancient Egyptian architects used sun-dried and kiln-baked bricks, fine sandstone, limestone and granite.* • The pyramids were built for the tombs of the Pharaohs.* • Pharaoh: Egyptian rulers, who were worshiped as Gods and held complete authority over the kingdom. • Construction of a burial monument commenced as soon a pharaoh was named, and continued until he died.
