What is the family grouping model? • Families consist of a teacher from each grade level along with reading and special education support staff. • Families meet collaboratively to focus on student strengths and develop strategies to meet individual student academic and social needs.
This is how it is set up… • Kindergarten students are re-sorted at the end of the year. • Typically students remain in cohorts in grades 1&2 and grades 3&4. • Students are re-sorted at the end of 2nd and 4th grade.
Benefits of Family Grouping • Shared experiences • Exposure to possible future teachers • Efficient transitions from year-to-year • Learning from peers across grade levels • Establishes long term social relationships
Common Core Learning StandardsCCLS • New York has adopted new learning standards that were initiated at the federal level called Core Curriculum Learning Standards. These new standards are research and evidence based, aligned with college and career expectations, more rigorous than our previous standards and internationally benchmarked since we are in a globally competitive society. Behavior Chart • Blue card – exceptional behavior • Green card – meeting the standard for behavior • Yellow card – received warning about behavior • Red card – received multiple warnings throughout the day without an improvement in behavior
English Language Arts (ELA) • Read Aloud: Used to model strategies for comprehension, model fluency, language development, enjoyment and to serve as a basis for integrating other curriculum topics (Science/ Social Studies) and as a means for writing. • Shared Reading:Demonstrating strategies for comprehension, reading fluency and word study. Typically this might include a “Big Book” where all students can read the text or may include an anthology such as Literacy Place where students have a shared text to read with. Poetry can also be used during this time. • Guided Reading: Small groups of children who share similar reading processes meet with the teacher to expand and apply reading strategies in a text at his/ her reading level. Students work at integrating important reading strategies and comprehension skills. • Independent Reading: Children read on their own or with a partner. This is an opportunity to apply reading strategies independently.
Writing • Shared /Interactive Writing: Modeling is critical in 1st & 2nd grade. Additionally, mini-lessons provide opportunity to plan and construct writing together. • Writer’s Workshop (guided & independent practice): This workshop provides students with the opportunity to write for different purposes across the curriculum. Mini-lessons and modeling is used to support students’ abilities to use different strategies/ skills and craft. • Writing Conferences: This provides students to meet one-on-one with a teacher to discuss strengths and possible goals to further their written expression. • Author’s Celebrations: Several times during the year, parents will be invited to our classroom to hear the students present stories that they have published. The kids love sharing their hard work!

Math • Math Investigations is a curriculum resource used. It is recommended by the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics. • Supplemental resources are used to match the district and state standards. • At home practice of skills and math facts is beneficial to support in school progress. • Please utilize the math skills at www.ixl.com and/or Pearson Success Net.
