Problem • According to the NAEP, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, secondary students are not making significant gains in reading. • Literature suggests that students are more likely to be engaged in reading if they are given the opportunity to make their own reading selections (Rossow and Hess, 2001).

Purpose • Quasi-Experimental Mixed-Method approach • Will student choice have a positive impact on student academic performance? • Will more prevalent use of student selected material increase the interest of secondary readers?
Research Question #1 • Does student choice in reading have a positive impact on student academic performance?
Research Question #2 • Is there a difference in motivation when students are given choices in reading in the classroom?
Research Question #3 • What are teacher perceptions on student motivation in the context of providing them reading choices?

Factors to Consider IMPLICATIONS LIMITATIONS • Academic performance will increase when students are given choices in their reading materials • Student will become empowered and more engaged in their reading • Motivation to read will increase • Time requirement on teachers involved-particularly in material selection • Field observation checklist requires additional time on behalf of teacher • Funding for additional materials may also be a factor
