The ProQual Level 2 Award in Utility Avoidance and the Location of Buried Services in Construction is aimed at site managers, supervisors, and excavation operatives in order that they have an understanding of the avoidance of danger from striking underground services. The awarding body is the ProQual Awarding Body which comes under the regulating body which is Ofqaul (the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation). At Sygma Solutions, we provide training in Level 2 Utility Avoidancewhich can be undertaken by anyone, since there are no formal entry qualifications required for the qualification. Our Level 2 Utility Avoidance training includes sessions on the use of the CAT and Genny in combination in order to locate and identify underground services on any site. While it is possible to locate certain services using the CAT only (those with electric power running through them), we are strong believers in the case for starting every survey using the Genny in conjunction with the CAT. In fact, most services cannot be located by the CAT alone, and even power cables cannot be detected if there is no power in them at the time. So, for example, street lighting cables could not be located during daylight hours when the lights are off. This could lead to serious issues because it could give the impression that there are no services on the site area. If excavation began on a dark winter afternoon when the lights were on, and the cable was then struck, it would very likely result in injuries, which are often very serious and on occasion fatal.
An Essential Requirement On Certain Sites The Level 2 Award is something that is becoming more and more a requirement for utility surveyors because you cannot work on some sites unless you have it. These include such sites as Heathrow Airport and all HS2 sites among others. At Sygma Solutions our CAT And Genny courses are run by experienced instructors who between them have over 100 years of combined expertise in utility location. This experience includes not just the location and identification of services, but also manufacturing of the equipment. In addition, we are sole UK distributors for the Mala GPR range of locators. Not only do we supply them but we also service and calibrate them (they do need calibration in order to keep up to scratch) and we also have five Mala Easy Locators that you can hire for your own use if required.
