  1. English 9 B Week 3 March 26th – 29th

  2. Monday • Vocabulary Lesson 15 Time • Collect Essays • Watch “A Place at the Table” – take notes comparing discrimination against different groups of people. How are they different? How are they the same? • HW: Tomorrow have the definitions for the following terms: • Dialect • Era • Period of Life • Lifestyle • Morals • Customs • Family Life • Cultural biases • Cultural lore

  3. Terms • Period of life – The time period which the main character’s life took place. • Era – the marking of a time period through innovation, events, etc. • Lifestyle – the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc., that together constitute the mode or choice of living of an individual or group. • Morals – The beliefs and values of the community and individuals. A sense of right and wrong • Customs - Custom, habit, practice  mean an established way of doing things. Custom,  applied to a community or to an individual, implies a more or less permanent continuance of a social usage: It is the custom to give gifts at Christmas time.

  4. Terms Cont. • Family Life – Family values, traditions, and habits. The importance of family and how families spend their time together • Dialect – The local coloring of language due to geography and time. How people talk. In TKAMB the characters have a southern dialect. • Cultural Biases - the phenomenon of interpreting and judging phenomena by standards inherent to one's own culture. We judge based on our conditioning to location and cultural norms • Cultural Lore – Stories, superstitions, and tales of a culture.

  5. Tuesday • Papers – MLA Formatting • Sentence Diagramming • TKAMB and Yellow Packet Assigned • Dialectal Notes with Guided Reading • HW: Chapters 1-3 with dialectal notes

  6. Journal #2 – Create your own culture • Journal #2 - Create your own culture and society based on the elements discussed from the yellow packet. Include a few of these items in your response: • What are the morals and beliefs of the society? • Name some of the customs of the areas. • How do people dress? • How would you describe the environment? • What do they do for entertainment? • How do they speak? What sorts of things do they talk about? • What is the primary occupation of the area? • What is the normal lifestyle there? • Are the people there well educated? Why or why not? • What is the climate like? • What are the famous landscapes and buildings? • HW: Chapter 4-6

  7. Wednesday • Sentence Diagramming Cont. • Directed Reading 4-6 of TKAMB • HW: Keep working on the packet and read through chapter six.

  8. Thursday • Sentence Diagramming Quiz • Vocabulary Quiz 15 • TKAMB Quiz chapters 1-4 • HW: TKAMB Chapters 5 and 6
