Table of contents: PXL insertion PXL Insertion Steps after PXL installation system is aligned PXL removal steps Some design details
PXL insertion steps Lift box off parking post and transfer to trolley post Pressurize the PXL support clamp
PXL insertion steps Pull back insertion lever. This lever moves the carriage over a 15 mm range. Vertical is the “in” limit, and back ~ 18 deg is the “out” limit
PXL insertion steps Roll the detector in on the trolley until the carriage is fully on the MSC/PST rails Remove the F rails The power and signal cables should be connected whenever it is easiest This will depend on cable length and accessibility
PXL insertion steps Slide the bulkhead box on to the engagement guides and up against the MSC plate. Secure the PXL box to the MSC using Two captured bolts (¼ inch hex key)
Push the insertion lever all the way forward to the vertical position. One should feel the snap in engagement of the kinematic mounts. PXL insertion steps Vent the pressurized PXL support clamp. Note: The guide ramps raise the box up releasing it from the trolley post so that the trolley is freed for removal. Roll back the trolley and remove the PXL delivery system
PXL removal steps • To remove the PXL from the MSC • Apply air pressure to the PXL support clamp • Install PXL delivery system and roughly align • position trolley • Pull back lever • Unscrew the two securing bolts • The PXL should be withdrawn using the pull tab on the bulkhead box. This will permit the desired engagement onto the trolley post
PXL removal steps • Withdraw until there is room to install the F rails, but leaving the carriage fully on the PIT rails (as shown above) • Align the rails
PXL removal steps Parking post • Withdraw fully so that the carriage is on the F rails and the PXL detector clears the front • Lift the bulkhead box from the trolley post and place on the parking post
Some design details During roll in and roll out the trolley post is captured by a shallow cup on the bottom of the bulkhead box. Guide ramps position the bulkhead box in x and y as it meets the MSC/PIT and raise it off the trolley post transferring the support from the post to the guides. The two captured bolts serve only to hold the bulkhead box in z against the MSC.
Some design details A lever actuated extender provides a reduced friction motion for the final engagement of the kinematic mounts. This allows better tactile feedback as the kinematic mount latches. Extender mechanism Pivot for vertical motion of the bulkhead box Lever coupled to extender with low stretch kevlar lines. Lines are crossed to extend when lever pushed west Non magnetic linear bearings Precision linear bearings mounted with play to outer frame using shoulder screws. This freedom (~±0.3 mm) should prevent binding caused by mechanical alignment errors. Cam driven slide
Some design details The extension is limited by two redundant stops, one in the extender mechanism and one on the carriage rails. The stops are designed to hit 3 mm past the final kinematic mount end point. This excess is absorbed by compression of the bellows pistons in the coupling lock mechanism. Therefore, the air pressure should be set high enough to overcome the kinematic springs and low enough to avoid damage.
