Current State of Affairs • Many students, regardless of grade level, do not like math • According to the EQAO results, 50% of our students are not successful (Grades 3, 6, and 9) • Most students do not respond well to direct instruction, yet it is the main strategy used by most high school math teachers

  3. Solutions • Ignore the problem and do what works for you • Actively explore, try, and reflect on new solutions • Create real world connections & motivation • Encourage active learning (manipulatives, technology, cooperative learning) • Involve students as much as possible • Address individual differences
