Parts of a flowering plant (With a new shoot) Functions • Flower: to make seeds • Roots: holds plant to the ground and takes in water and minerals from the soil. • Stem: holds up plant leaves and flowers and transports water and minerals around the plant. • Leaf: collects sunlight for photosynthesis (to make food for the plant) Leaf Stem
What’s photosynthesis all about? • Plants are a vital part of life on Earth. They are so important because they make their own food from sunshine. • This ability is a process called photosynthesis. • Because they make their own food, they are at the bottom of the food chain supplying food and energy for all other life on the earth.
Plants store extra sugars in their stems, roots, seeds or fruit. • That energy is passed on to any animal that eats them
The oxygen that is released in the process of photosynthesis is also essential for life on Earth.
Task • Draw a label the different parts of a plant including the flower, stem, roots and leaves and describe the function of each part.

Tuesday 12th April 2011 Flower Structure Aims • To be able to label the parts of a plant cell • Understand that the flower of a plant contains the reproductive organs • Be able to label these parts and construct a diagram.
Carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil join together using energy from the sun to make sugars (food) in the leaf of the plant. This is called photosynthesis.
Reproductive organs of a plant flower • The contains the reproductive organs Petals: brightly coloured and attract insects needed for pollination Stamens: are the male parts of the flower. The anther is a sticky bit so the yellow pollen can stick to it. The part that supports the anther is called the filament.
Stigma Style Carpel: the female parts of the flower. Consist of the - stigma (sticky so pollen can stick to it) • style (where pollen travels down) • Ovary (in the ovary are ovules which have the female egg cell). Ovary
