  2. End-notes • For most of you, I would’ve written a letter (or several of them) within a circle • This letter doesn’t stand for your grade!! • It stands for the specific error you made in that answer, which you should pay attention to during class discussions

  3. A • You confused demand & supply factors • When asked for demand factors, never talk about the supply! This applies both ways • E.g. Why is land supply limited? You cannot say that “land supply is limited because rising population results in increased demand for land”

  4. This is the supply of land in a country/world The supply is 50km2 of land

  5. Has supply fallen/become more limited? NO! The supply is still 50km2 of land

  6. B • You need to talk about ALL and EACH of the conflicting demands for land to get your marks • This applies only to question 2 • Conflicting demands are: • Recreation, Industrial, Housing, Transport, Agriculture • Each of the above is 0.5 marks. Each supporting example/explanation is 0.5 marks

  7. C • You are writing too leisurely • What is leisurely – doing something in a slow, easy pace. • How to tell if you’re writing too leisurely? • Ticks are very far from one another • Citing excessive examples • Too many explanatory sentences • Ask me

  8. How are you marked for an 8m essay? • LORMS (you ought to know this by now) • Level 1: ONE-SIDED ANSWER (1 – 3) • Level 2: TWO-SIDED ANSWER (4 – 6) • Level 3: GOOD TWO-SIDED ANSWER with CONCLUSION (7 – 8)

  9. How to write an 8m essay? • Plan: • Intro and conclusion (duh) • 3 points: 2 For 1 Against, or the other way round. Therefore, write 3 body paragraphs (if well-written, you would’ve gotten at least 6 marks!) • If the essay is on a given factor/policy, your first paragraph MUST be on the given factor/policy • Benefits & Limitations for every point!

  10. What does into a paragraph for an 8m essay? P-E-E-L My PEEL is quite different from other teachers’ PEELs: Point Explanation/Example Evaluation Linkage Maybe it should be spelt P-E-E-E-L? When do you need this? Only in essays!

  11. Evaluation • In the guidance on How to write a paragraph I gave you on wiki in Week 1, I did not include evaluation. • Why? Because we weren’t doing essay paragraphs • Evaluation is: • Not necessary in a 2 – 6 mark question unless asked for • Absolutely necessary in an 8 mark essay question

  12. The best response to water scarcity is desalination. Do you agree? • What 3 points do you want to talk about? • Desalination • Water Conservation • Water Recycling • Any other response to water scarcity

  13. Exercise • Write the first body paragraph for the question: The best response to water scarcity is desalination. Do you agree? • Choose another two points to write about: tell me about their benefits and limitations • Let me check your work
