CREZ Reactive Study Update Dan Woodfin Director, System Planning RPG
ERCOT CREZ Reactive Study Overview • ERCOT is facilitating CREZ TSP study being performed by ABB (see ABB’s March RPG presentation for background) http://www.ercot.com/content/meetings/rpg/keydocs/2010/0312/ABB_RPG_presentation.pdf • Four basic study elements • Reactive Compensation Requirements – series and shunt compensation • Subsynchronous Interactions (SSI) between wind generation and reactive compensation • Subsynchronous Resonance (SSR) between thermal generation and reactive compensation • Equipment Specifications RPG
Reactive Requirements Study • Several situations must be studied, including: • Max Export (capacitive requirements) • Min Export (inductive requirements) • Peak Demand • Requires steady-state and dynamic stability analyses to be performed • The goal is to design a global reactive compensation strategy • Some intermediate resolutions: • Series Compensation remains 50% • Modification to connections at Tesla substation • Allow 1.1 per unit voltage on lines between substations for up to 30 minutes RPG
Reactive Requirements Study • Reactive compensation strategy to determine dynamic reactive device (DRD) type, sizing and placement, based on analysis of critical contingencies • Initial dynamic simulations showed high frequency interactions between wind farm controls • Lack of sufficiently-strong synchronous current source, particularly in Panhandle • Use of synchronous condensers to meet a portion of the dynamic reactive requirement resolves issue to sufficient extent • Additional DRDs required • SVCs located at several 345kV CREZ stations • Some additional dynamic reactive support needed in DFW RPG
Initial Build • The issue with wind farms being unable to operate where insufficient synchronous current source is available (low system strength) may be able to be resolved in several ways: • Increase system strength by installation of synchronous condensers, as noted above • Increased system strength with synchronous generation connected in the Panhandle or VFT ties • Require wind turbines designed to operate with a low short circuit ratio (to the extent feasible) • Others? • What solution is most efficient needs further discussion • Initial Build case proposed that would only install a portion of the DRDs initially • Based on level of wind generation supported by expected levels of fault current • Allows the market to explore efficient solution(s) RPG
SSI/SSR • Further study has been awaiting reactive equipment study completion • Consideration of thyristor switched capacitors versus passive filters to minimize issues is on-going • Will share results with generators when complete RPG
