  3. Collaboration for Madison’s 4 year olds

  4. Professional development • designed for educators currently certified to teach kindergarten in Wisconsin • focused on developing practices that value the knowledge and resources children bring to school, their unique developmental needs, & using mathematics as a prism for practice

  5. PD Goals • blend knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice with the resources that children bring from home to build culturally relevant mathematics learning: • identify and use activities to develop counting skills in both informal and formal settings • develop curriculum that is embedded in child activity and builds on family resources and what kids bring • identify and build on the mathematics/al activities children use in their home; help families to mathematize everyday activities

  6. PD Courses • Fall 2010: Early Childhood Education • Spring 2011: Environments • Summer 2011: EC Methods & Materials • Fall 2011/Spring 2012: Action Research & Practicum

  11. Study Goals (aligned with PD goals) • access children’s out-of-school experiences through instruction that is developmentally appropriate, equitable & culturally relevant • develop culturally effective ways to support families in understanding how to mathematize their children’s out-of-school activities.

  12. Study Requirements • All materials generated for course assignments • Tape-recorded conversations of course discussions • 2 individual interviews

  13. Study Provides • tuition (also supported by MMSD and UW) • netbooks - journaling, reflection submission, access to collaborative website, store documents • digital cameras - children, classrooms • stipend - interviews • vibrant community interested in 4K
