Welcome Third Grade Parents! Informational Meeting Presented by: Mrs. Arrington Mrs. Brown Miss Isaacs Mrs. Ferguson Mrs. Shepard
Mrs. Shepard – SOL Information • The SOL Test window is mid May-June 8th. Please make plans for your child to arrive to school on time. Late students can not be admitted into the testing site. • Your child WILL BE PREPARED for each SOL by the time the SOLs are here. If your child is studying regularly for our science, social studies, and math tests throughout the year, there will not be any need for excessive preparation at home. As long as students are in attendance and studying regularly, we can prepare them. • A happy child= a learning child. Join us in giving your child love, encouragement, hugs, and “high fives” often as we study and grow together. A prepared child = a confident child.
Miss Isaacs – Homework & Responsibility • Welcome to UPPER Elementary!! Students are no longer in primary school so expectations for individual responsibility is higher. • Third grade brings about quite a bit of responsibility. • Homework is to be complete with or without parent’s help, although the help is encouraged & appreciated. • Extra curricular activities are encouraged. However, completing homework should be a priority! • Studying is done Monday – Thursday and is VERY important. • Please allow your child to walk to class on his/her own. • Students are to go to breakfast before coming to the classroom. This is a school rule.
Mrs. Arrington – Social Studies & Science? In the same day? • Science and social studies units are being taught at the same time this year. Instead of having one for two weeks and then the other, your child is having to study each regularly. • How to study for science and social studies: • *When you first get your study guide, go over entire study guide to see what you will be learning. Make flash cards for vocabulary and other information that might be unfamiliar to you. • *Only review vocabulary or information that we have gone over in class. Look through your packet and/or interactive notebook to see what has been done in class to help with knowing what to review nightly.
Mrs. Brown – Math Skills & Multiplication • Your child’s math ability will grow by leaps and bounds this year. They are leaving the world of two and three digit numbers behind and will learn place value of up to 6 digits. • Multiplication and Division will be studied during the third six weeks (old fashioned flash cards work wonders). They will know multiplication and division facts 0-12. • Money, money, money! Students will working with amounts up to $5.00. This includes: adding, subtracting and counting back change. Counting back change throws some students so real-life practice at home will reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. • “What time is it?” This is a phrase we hear quite often during the day. Your child should practice telling time on an analog (and digital) clock to the nearest minute and five minute interval and elapsed time. • Other biggies- 3D shapes, measurement, fractions, and decimals
Mrs. Ferguson– Agenda • Please help us keep your student organized! • All homework is written down in the agenda daily. All assignments must be completed. • The agenda must be signed each night to ensure that “non-written” homework was completed (reading, studying). • Thank you for your help!
