  1. What are the other 80% of the students doing? Presented by Jen Chunta Michelle Wagoner

  2. Today’s Agenda • Who we are • Ways to set up for the other 80% • Content Ideas • Math Ideas • Language Arts Ideas • Comments/Resources

  3. Who are we? • Jen • Michelle • Our school is about 150 students K-5 • Last Year • This Year

  4. Setting up the other 80% • Panther Time • Parent Volunteers • Specialist

  5. Other 80% Option 1 Stay in Classroom • Work independently • Small group • Anchor activities

  6. Other 80% Option 2 Parent Volunteers • Location • Activities • Expectations

  7. Other 80% Option 3 Specialist • Multiple ways to utilize • Specialists are responsible for planning and teaching a math, content, or reading lesson • SUPPORT the specialist

  8. Turn and share • Discuss ways you can engage your other 80% during intervention time.

  9. Content Ideas • Work in small groups to work on presentation to share with rest of class. This would work best for 3-5 in the classroom. For 1-2, the students would need adult supervision such as parent volunteers, specialist, or assistants.

  10. Content Ideas Vocabulary • Make index cards with word and picture on one side and definition on the other. Students make extras for those in Intervention groups. • Students use a flipbook to write the word on one side and an illustration/definition on the inside. • For social studies, students can use flipbook to write about important people: who are they, when they were important, and why they were important.

  11. Make and Take Foldable to show understanding • Fold paper hamburger style. • Fold paper hamburger style again. • Fold left side to meet right side. • Unfold last two folds. • Tear down the middle to the first crease. • Unfold all the way and then refold hot dog style. • Hold onto the outer edges (left and right) and push the paper towards the middle. • Fold into little booklet. • On front cover write or illustrate the main concept you are learning. On the following sheets, write words or ideas that you want to remember. • Students now become the teacher in small groups.

  12. Content Ideas • Make a Menu Board with various websites on it. These should be websites that give the students more information about what they are learning or a place to experiment with what they are learning.

  13. Choose one activity from each course to learn about volcanoes and earthquakes. Volcanoes and Earthquakes

  14. Content Ideas • Read a book that you might other wise not be able to fit in. • Have the students write about what they have learned about the content.

  15. Have the specialist show how content applies to their area of expertise. (i.e. show on map where an artist or musician came from and it’s distance from USA when doing map study.)

  16. Turn and Share • Discuss some ways you can extend content in your school with the other 80%. • How can you involve the specialist or volunteers? I have an idea!

  17. Math Ideas • Math Games • Provide them with logic activities for them to do individually or with a partner

  18. Math Ideas • Use menus (Decimals/Money Grades 3-5) • Students play store with coins to purchase things and learn to trade coins. (Money Grades 1-2) • Concentration Math (Memory)- write a math problem on one color of card and the answer on another color. Students play the game by choosing a math problem card, figuring the answer, and then choosing an answer card. • Math Tic Tac Toe Board – computer lab

  19. Math Ideas • The specialist explain how what they are learning in the classroom is used in their area. Music • Grades 1-2 can count beats, add up the total beats in a song, or identify fractions. • Grades 3-5 can add fractions of the songs including mixed fractions. Art • Grades 1-2 measure with rulers, identify and draw 3D figures • Grades 3-5 measure with rulers, measuring grams and ounces and then mixing colors.

  20. Math with Specialists PE • Grades 1-2 comparing measuring with rulers and yardsticks, using timers for racing. • Grades 3-5 converting feet into meters, comparing times in second and minutes.

  21. Make and Take • Take 15 index cards. • Write one number 0-9, +, -,÷,× and a decimal on the cards. • You can use these cards in many ways. We are going to play 2 games using the cards. • I will say a number and you need to arrange the cards to show that number. • Turn all the number cards over. Leave the addition symbol turned up. Turn over 2 cards and give the sum of the cards.

  22. Turn and Share • Discuss other math games/ideas you may be able to use with your other 80% with parent volunteers or in the classroom? • What other activities could your specialist do with extending your students’ knowledge?

  23. Language Arts Ideas • Independent reading time • Reading response • Small group reading comprehension games • Work to write and illustrate a Story Matrix

  24. Language Arts Ideas • Teacher provides students with books to do a genre study • Read aloud various books and complete a venn diagram comparing books, characters • Character traits • Connections

  25. Language Arts • Discuss some language arts activities you have and how you could utilize them with volunteers, specialist or in the classroom for the other 80%.
