Workshop for 2012 WCC A Global Strategy of “Green Growth and Nature+” 2012. 09. 09 Young Han Kwon
Objective of workshop • Why we need green growth? Is there a common ground? Is it a co-benefit or win-win strategy? • Is it possible to enhance value and conservation of natural resources, which is one of IUCN's targets, by green growth? • If the green growth strategy is introduced and applied, what needs to be considered? • Integrated discussion with audiences regarding challenging issues of the green growth ▶Refer to the motion 140, the title is; Green growth as a sustainable strategy for nature conservation and economic development
Global urgent issues • Current patterns and activities for economic growth →Cause to increase societal costs and to restrict economic development →Eventually reduce sustainability • a bottle-necked phenomena, air and water pollution, climate changes, and increase of biodiversity losses (Figure), causing potential irreversible situation
Why do we need Green Growth? • We would need new production and consumption patterns and require a strategy for systematic changes to resolve urgent global issues • The green growth strategy can provide environmental and societal benefits continuously through both economic development and conservation of natural resources
Basic concept • Green Growth is to support economic growth and development, while preventing environmental degradation, unsustainable use of natural resource, and biodiversity loss (OECD)
Potential effects of green growth • Maintain or enhance the level of economic development • Prevent environmental damages and improve environmental problems • Effective use of natural resources • Develop green technology and create new jobs • Reduce GHG and energy consumption
Meaning of Nature+ 의의 • Theme : Strengthening the resilience of nature • Slogan : Improving how quickly nature and people adapt to change. Better use of the inherent robustness of nature leads to healthier natural systems, better results from ecosystem and biodiversity restoration, and healthier people, communities and economies. [Nature+ development] Nature-based solutions to social and economic development
Economic development based on natural resources • Greening the economy (IUCN 2013~2016 Program) • Nature conservation vs economic development: conflict/antagonistic or dependent/symbiotic? • Pursuit both nature conservation and economic development together by ecosystem conservation, resource reuse, renewable energy usage, etc. • Emphasize importance of economic value of biodiversity and ecosystem service and eco-friendly businesses
Strategic goal A new Paradigm of economic development ▼ Green Growth Republic of Korea, OECD, etc Value and conservation of natural resources (Greening the Economy : IUCN 2013-2016 Program) IUCN link A new global agenda for Current sustainable development [Application of Green Growth for win-win strategy of natural conservation and economic development]
Significance and expectation • A useful strategy for establishing economic opportunities based on natural resources of IUCN • Continued links of the vision and goals between IUCN and Green Growth will serve to strengthen value and conservation of natural resources and contribute to current sustainable development
Things to consider for the global strategy • Mainstreaming Green Growth • Consider characteristics of each country (status, development, feasibility, etc.) • Prepare tools for implementation and monitoring of nature-based Green Growth • Prepare a strategy to disseminate Green Growth in relation to the value and conservation of natural resources • Others (PR, R&D, information sharing, national and/or international collaboration, etc.)
Follow-up issues and discussion • How to establish a legal framework of Green Growth? • How to implement and monitor nature-based Green Growth? • How to disseminate Green Growth • Others?
