  6. The Holy Spirit 1) Introduction 2) The Holy Spirit is Lord (God) 3) The Holy Spirit is the Giver of Life 4) Proceeds from the Father 5) The Holy Spirit was spoken by the prophets 6) The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

  7. 2) The Holy Spirit: God and Lord • 2Thess 3:5; “And may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ” • Acts 5:3-4; “You have lied to the Holy Spirit…you have lied to God” • 2 Corinthians 3:17,18; “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” • 1Thess 3:11-12; “And may our God and Father Himself and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all”

  8. Holy Spirit: Attributes of Deity Creator • Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life” • Genesis 2:7 “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” • Psalm 104:30; “When you send your Spirit, they are created…” • Genesis 1:2; “…and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” • Psalm 33:6; Isaiah 40:6-7

  10. Holy Spirit: Attributes of Deity Eternal • Hebrews 9:14; “How much more then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God…” The Holy Spirit is eternal and uncreated. In fact, He is Creator • “When you (LORD) send your Spirit, they are created…” Psalm 104:30 • “O LORD, are you not from everlasting?” Hab 1:12

  11. Sins Against the Holy Spirit equated as sins against God Grieving the Holy Spirit • Ephesians 4:30; “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God…” Resisting the Holy Spirit • Acts 7:51; “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit” Quenching the Spirit • I Thessalonians 5:19; “Do not quench the Spirit”

  12. Sins Against the Holy Spirit equated as sins against God • Rejecting/Insulting the Spirit • Hebrews 10:28-29; “Anyone who rejected the law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?”

  13. Sins Against the Holy Spirit equated as sins against God • Blaspheme of the Holy Spirit • Matthew 12:31-32; “Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”

  14. Because of the above …, the ChurchPray and Praise God the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is fully God and powerful to answer prayer. Christians in the NT communicated with Him. • In response to prayer and fasting, the Holy Spirit DIRECTLY answers the Christians at Antioch to the work for which HE has called them. • “As they ministered to be the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them” Acts 13:2 • The will of the Holy Spirit was known by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. This also implies direct communication with Him. • “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things” Acts 15:28 • The Holy Spirit communicates DIRECTLY to Paul: • “except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me” Acts 20:23

  18. 4) The Holy Spirit’s “proceeding” • “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me” John 15:26 • From the Father not the Father and the Son • Difference between the words “proceed” and “send” • From the Father, the Son is “born” and the Holy Spirit “proceeds”; all in the beginning. However, in a certain time, the Father “sent” the Son “in the fullness of the time” Gal 4:4 and the Holy Spirit (day of Pentecost) ; Acts 2

First He says…” [Jeremiah 31:31-34] • Matthew 22:43; [Jesus] said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit…” [quotes Psalm 110:1] • “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” [spoken 7 times by Jesus in Revelation 2 & 3]

  22. Holy Spirit: His worksHe spoke through the prophets and predicted the future • I Peter 1:10; “Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow”
