  3. What are some characteristics of the Gilded Age?

Activity – The Gilded Age Gather as much information as you possibly can about the Gilded Age in your group ½ picked to rotate will change seats every 2 ½ minutes, 2 minutes, and 1 ½ minutes after having brainstormed what you know We will come together as a class and figure out what you’ve put down.

The Gilded Age Social Darwinism – Survival of the fittest – those that are most adequately prepared to deal with society will be successful Gilded – to be rotten on the inside but pretty on outside Immense Immigration Migration to cities in search of jobs, education and other opportuniites (urbanization)

  6. The Gilded Age Racism and discrimination against blacks and immigrants Second Industrial Revolution where steel replaces iron as leading raw material Big business grows but so does corruption in government Working conditions become horrible for factory workers

  8. The Gilded Age Sherman Anti-trust Act is passed – it made monopolies and trusts (deals between companies that work to form a monopoly) illegal - AFL founded by Samuel Gompers – Labor Unions grow and organize 1890

  9. The Gilded Age Plessy v. Ferguson – “Separate but Equal” is ruled in Supreme Court – it’s okay to have separate facilities and services for different races, as long as those facilities are equal in quality 1896

  10. Assembly Line and Industrialization Assembly line helps to grow manufacturing industries in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s Industries grow quickly because owners are more willing to invest in order to get back bigger profit – industrialization

  11. Arrival at Ellis Island (East Coast) and Angel Island (West Coast) Immigrants were coming to U.S. because of job opportunities developed by manufacturing jobs
