What is the Maria Theresa Thaler? The Maria Theresa Thaler is a silver thaler (an old European dollar) that was origianally struck in Austria in 1741 to try to impress the empress Maria Theresa.
M. Theresia. D. G? • The following is printed on the coin: • M. THERESIA D. G. R. IMP. HU. BO. REG. • What does that say?Maria Theresia, Dei Gratia RomanorumImperatrix, HungaraieBoherniaeque Regina, • In English? • Maria Theresa, by the grace of God, Empress of the Romans, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, (today western Czech Republic)
Reverse side: • ARCHID. AVST. DUX. BURG. CO. TYR, 1780 X. • ArchiduxAustriae, Dux Burgundiae, Comes Tyrolis. 1780 X. • Archduchess of Austria, Duchess of Burgundy, Countess of Tyrol. 1780
How It All Started • When the MTT was first struck, Maria ruled Austria, Hungary and Bohemia. On Septemver 19, 1587, Austria’s Emperor: Francis Joseph made the MTT official coinage. Just a year later, it lost its value in its home country, Austria.
MTT = Crazy! • Soon, It struck UK, India, Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany. But that was just Europe. Until WWII, It hit Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and down to Mozambique. It could also be found in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman. Wow, Maria Theresa must have been very great indeed!
