Sir Thomas Stamford raffles (1781-1826) Who was he? What were his contributions to the colonization of Singapore? • Sir Stamford Raffles started work as a clerk in London for the British East India Company and worked his way up the ladder. His knowledge of the language of the region- Malay combined with his able nature certainly worked for him. Even though he was not one of Lord Hastings’s stellar performing employee, Raffles’s connection during his work tenure in the South East Asian region secured him the position. • Sir Stamford Raffles was the founder of modern Singapore.
William Farquhar (1774 – 1839) Who was he? What were his contributions to the colonization of Singapore? • Since William Farquhar had experience with the Malayan Peninsula he had great knowledge of the politics that took place in the area. Farquhar was asked to help Raffles found Singapore. • William Farquhar was one who helped the most in the negotiation of the Singapore Treaty of February 6th 1824. Farquhar also assisted in confirming Britain’s right to set up a trading port. With all of his contribution he was Singapore’s first resident.

Crawfurd is known for his collaboration with Sir Stamford Raffles in the colonization and the signing of the treaty, which is sometimes called the Crawfurd Treaty.
