  1. (CL)3:A Shape-Shifting Lab for Collaboration and Computers David I. Schwartz Lecturer, Department of Computer Science Cornell University LabMan, June 2005, Cornell University

  2. Overview • The Grand Idea • Inspiration • Design Process • Future Work • Questions LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Overview

  3. The Grand Idea • Our axioms: • Teams • Facilitation • Computers • Flexibility • How to merge all of these? LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → The Grand Idea

  4. Inspiration • History (a strange, winding trail): • Campus Life→Library • AEW • CreationStations • Game Design • Initial academics: • AEWs, programming, game design • How did/do these influence (CL)3? LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Inspiration

  5. AEW Model • Academic Excellence Workshop:http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/student-services/learning/academic-excellence-workshops/faqs.cfm • Small teams in lab • Complement science/math courses • Student/peer facilitation • The Need: computers + teams • AEW + Computer Science? LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Inspiration → AEW Model

  6. Pair Programming • Extreme Programminghttp://www.extremeprogramming.org • Philosophy of software engineering • One aspect: pair programming • Pilot/Co-pilot • Adapted by many CS1 courses • The Need: shared workstations • Example of course? LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Inspiration → Pair Programming

  7. Computer Game Design • Teams and games: • Interdisciplinary course (CIS300)http://www.cis.cornell.edu/courses/cis300 • Art, music, writing, programming: • Team size: ~5 • Facilitated learning • Co-operative learning • The Need: digital arts+teams • Common thread of teamwork? LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Inspiration → Computer Game Design

  8. Terms for Teamshttp://www.thirteen.org/edonline/concept2class/month5 • Collaborative learning: method of teaching and learning in which students team together to explore a significant question or create a meaningful project. A group of students discussing a lecture or students from different schools working together over the Internet on a shared assignment are both examples of collaborative learning. • Cooperative learning: specific kind of collaborative learning. In cooperative learning, students work together in small groups on a structured activity. They are individually accountable for their work, and the work of the group as a whole is also assessed. Cooperative groups work face-to-face and learn to work as a team. LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Inspiration → Terms for Teams

  9. Specifications • Fundamentals of (CL)3: • collaboration/co-operations • “guide by side” and “sage on stage” • Multiple facilitation • Student/teacher configuration • Digital arts • Ultimately: flexibility LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Design Process → Specifications

  10. Original Concept • Flexible circular lab • Outside curve • Group and class “meetings” LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Design Process → Original Concept

  11. Prototyping • Collaborative design • Full-scale mockup • Construction Styrofoam • Development revealed initial design flaws • Testing by using LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → DesignProcess → Prototyping

  12. Table Concept • Curved 1/8 circles • Inside curve • Dual monitor • Single CPU • Shape-shifting LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Design Process → Table Concept

  13. Configurations • Shape shifting lab • Plug-n-play tables • Student/teacher driven LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Design Process → Configurations

  14. Implementation • Collaborative team • Weekly meetings • “Committee chairs” LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Implementation

  15. Future Work • Assessment and evaluation: • Facilitate co-operation? • Facilitate team learning? • Improve perception of computer work? • Other kinds of courses? • Shape-shifting use and technology? • Next version…? LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Future Work

  16. Acknowledgements • Daisy Fan • Steve Weidner • Dave Davies • (CL)3 development team • FABIT and Cornell Libraries LabMan 2005: (CL)3 → Acknowledgements
