  2. Cells • Organism: any living thing. • Smallest living organism: CELLS!

  3. Cells • Cell: the smallest unit of living things that can carry out the basic process of life.

  4. Cells • Unicellular: one-celled organism is made of a single cell that carries out its life process.

  5. Cells • Multicellular: Organisms made of more than one cell.

  7. Cells • Cell membrane: layer around the outside of the cell that controls what materials move into and out of the cell.

  8. Cells • Cytoplasm: the gel-like liquid that fills the cell. The green fluid shown in the cell is the Cytoplasm.

  9. Cells • Nucleus: the control center of the cell. Usually found in the center of the cell, and is large and round.

  10. Cells • Mitochondria: Oval in shape and is the energy producer within a cell.

  11. Cells • Vacuoles: used to store food and water within a cell.

  12. Plant Cells • Plants have many of the same structures and organelles as animal cells. However, plant cells often have a box-like shape and are a bit larger than animal cells.

  13. Plant Cells • Cell Wall: Plants have an additional outer covering around the outside of the cell. The wall is a stiff structure and provides supportfor the plant.

  14. Plant Cells • Vacuole: Different from animal cells, plant cells usually have one large, central vacuole. In plant cells this vacuole stores water and provides extra support.

  15. Plant Cells • Chloroplast: Plants make their own food in structures inside these cells. Chloroplast is a green structure (which is one reason most plants are green) where sunlight is used to produce food for the plant.
