Geographic Vocabulary 1.Geography- study of the Earth’s surface and the processes that shape it 2. Hemisphere- ½ of the Earth 3. Lines of latitude- AKA parallels; imaginary lines that circle the globe from East to West 4. Apparently I hate the number 4 5. Lines of Longitude- AKA meridians; imaginary lines that circle the globe form North to South
Geographic Vocabulary 6. Equator- line of latitude measuring 0°; splits Earth into N & S Hemi. 7. Prime Meridian- line of longitude measuring 0°; splits Earth into E & W Hemi. 8. Globe- a 3D, scale model of the Earth 9. Projection- AKA Maps; the image of the Earth projected on a flat surface

Climate- the average weather of a place taken over an extended period of time (many years) 13. Compass Rose- shows direction on a map
Geographic Vocabulary 14.Key- shows the meaning of symbols and colors on a map 15. Scale Bar- shows real life distance between points on a map 16. Political Map- shows political features such as national or state boundaries, capital cities, and other major cities
Geographic Basics 17. Physical Map- usually colored or shaded to show a region’s landforms or waterways; show geographic features of the land 18. Special Purpose Map- a map of an area map to show a specific topic such as climate, language, or economic activity
