Bill Rosener Executive Vice President Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa Recycled Asphalt Shingles in Hot Mix AsphaltCase Studies of New State Specifications and Implementation
Introduction • New guy on the job last year • Credit to those that deserve it: Scott Schram, IDOT Bituminous Engineer Dr. Chris Williams, ISU Associate Professor • Waste Commission of Scott County • APAI Contractors
APAI Role • Facilitator between contractors and IDOT • Three Open House Demonstrations in 2009 • Featured at Greater Iowa Asphalt Conference 500 Attendees • Featured at six Regional Conference Meetings 200 Attendees • Participate in this excellent webinar • Three RAS Workshops in 2010 across Iowa • Three Open House Demos planned for 2010
Recycled Shingles are Good for Asphalt • High Asphalt Cement Content 30% by weight • High grade aggregate • Fibers • Lime Dust (natural anti-strip)
Marketplace Determines Feasibility • Contractors see potential for cost savings • Contractors see “green” benefits • Contractors see risk (DNR / OSHA) • IDOT sees benefits in lower prices and green initiative • IDOT places specification burden on RAS suppliers thus allowing contractors to try using RAS before becoming recyclers themselves
Conclusions • APAI’s role is facilitator between contractors and public agencies including IDOT, county, city and consulting engineers • IDOT is the “rule maker” for all of Iowa • RAS is beneficial to asphalt • The success of RAS will ultimately depend on the marketplace and regulatory agencies
Thank yous • Scott Schram, IDOT Bituminous Engineer • Dr. Chris Williams, ISU Associate Professor • Waste Commission of Scott County • APAI Contractors • CMRA • Dan Krivit, Foth Engineering
