  4. What is a subordinate clause? • A clause that begins with a subordinating conjunction is called a subordinate or dependent clause. • A subordinate clause cannot stand by itself. It has to be attached to an independent clause to become a complete sentence.

  5. What is a complex sentence? • When a subordinate clause is attached to an independent clause, it is called a complex sentence. • If the subordinate clause begins the sentence, it must be followed by a comma. • If the independent clause begins the sentence, there is no comma. • Example: • If you love me, you’ll buy me chocolate. • You’ll buy me chocolate if you love me.

  6. Using subordination to combine sentences • Simple Sentences: • Mrs. O’Ryan will watch more football. Time Warner now has NFL Network. • Combined: Mrs. O’Ryan will watch more football since Time Warner now has NFL Network. OR • Since Time Warner now has NFL Network, Mrs. O’Ryan will watch more football.

  9. Combine the two sentences using a subordinating conjunction • Borderlands 2 was released last Tuesday. Collin hasn’t gotten much sleep. • Wonder Woman used her Lasso of Truth. Batman had to tell her he was Bruce Wayne. • Jasmine has a magic carpet. She only uses it in emergency situations. • Mrs. Phillips hurried back to the restaurant. She realized she left her wallet on the table. • Halloween is my favorite holiday. I like dressing up as Gene Simmons from KISS.
