Two Causes of Religious Error Matthew 22:29 You Do Err
You Do Err • Take away knowledge of the scriptures and men walk in darkness (Psa. 119:105, 130) • Take away God’s power and men will limit God to a measure of his own small ideas (Isa. 55:8-9) • The Sadducees thought they had Jesus trapped with their common-sense wisdom • Why did they so “greatly err” (Mk. 12:27)?
Not Knowing the Scriptures • They were Jews who studied and taught the Law, but did not believe or understand it (Acts 23:7-8) • Today, much religious error is due to the same cause Salvation by faith alone (Jas. 2:24) Cannot fall from grace (Gal. 5:4) Many religious bodies (Eph. 4:4) Many causes for divorce (Mt. 19:9)
Not Knowing the Scriptures • Demand scripture for all that you do in religion and place scripture over human tradition • Desire to know the truth of scripture • Understand the meanings of the original words in a scripture • Keep a scripture in its context • Take all the scriptures together that are related a topic
Nor the Power of God • They were Jews who believed in God, but did not believe in the power of God (Acts 26:8) • Today, much religious error is due to the same cause Power of creation (Rom. 1:20) Power of the miraculous (Rom. 1:4) Power of the gospel to save (Rom. 1:16) Power of the gospel to live (2 Tim. 3:5)
Nor the Power of God • Remember we are not the Creator (Rom. 1:25) • Remember we do not guide ourselves (Jer. 10:23) • Remember with God all things are possible (Mt. 19:26) • Remember there is nothing too hard for God (Gen. 18:14; Jer. 32:17)
You Do Err • Man, not God, is the cause of error • God will allow one to err who does not love the truth (2 Thess. 2:10-12) • Christians can err from the truth (Jas. 5:19-20) • The spirit of error is opposed to the Apostles’ teaching (1 Jn. 4:6) • Will you obey truth today and leave behind error?
