Apprenticeships Key Updates • Continuous introduction of New Apprenticeship Standards and lots more in development! https://www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/ • Review of apprenticeship standard funding bands • Reduction of employer contributions for Non-Levy from 10% to 5% from April 2019 • Beginning of levy funds claw back from May 2019

Frameworks Vs Standards Frameworks • Conventionally qualification led • Assessment throughout duration of apprenticeship – Combination of classroom delivery and workplace • Assessment and achievement of multiple qualifications at different levels: • Knowledge Element (Technical Certificate / Diploma) • Competence Element (NVQ) • Functional Skills – English, Maths and in some cases ICT • Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Frameworks Vs Standards Standards • Occupation Focused • Is structured around skills, knowledge and behaviours that the apprentice will need to have learned by the end of their apprenticeship • Achievement is based on IndependentEnd Point Assessment. This may include: • An on-demand test • A practical observation • A professional discussion • A presentation or work based project • A competency based interview • An assessment of portfolio of evidence

Teaching Assistant Standard Level 3 • 18 Month duration • 20% off the job training relevant to standard requirements • Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours Criteria • No mandatory qualification • Apprenticeship Standard Certificate upon completion of End Point Assessment – Pass, Merit or Distinction • Maximum funding band of £5,000

  10. Teaching Assistant Standard Level 3 End Point Assessment: • Practical Observation – 2 Hours followed by 15 minute Q & A • Professional discussion supported by a portfolio of evidence – 90 minutes And Point Assessment to take place over 2 week maximum period.

  12. Off-the-job Training Time Must be 20% of the apprentices contracted work time. It is a mandatory requirement. Not just day release to college!! Guidance from GOV.UK: Off-the-job training is defined as learning which is undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of an apprenticeship. The off-the-job training must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship framework or standard and could include the following. • The teaching of theory (for example: lectures, role playing, simulation exercises, online learning or manufacturer training) • Practical training: shadowing, mentoring, industry visits and attendance at competitions • Learning support and time spent writing assessments/assignments.

Off-the-job Training Time Off-the-job training does not include: • English and Maths (up to level 2) which is funded separately • Progress reviews or on-programme assessment needed for an apprenticeship framework or standard • Training which takes place outside the apprentice’s paid working hours Further guidance can be accessed using the link below: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apprenticeships-off-the-job-training

  15. Employer Incentive Grant • Grant Incentive available for all employers for 16-18 year old apprentices • £500 paid after 13 weeks on programme • Remaining £500 paid after 12 months
