Key Information • Motivation is the driving force that pushes us towards achieving our goals and shapes our behaviour. • There is two types • Intrinsic motivation is the desire to challenge yourself and the enjoyment gained form your sporting participation and enjoyment. It comes from inside us. • Extrinsic Motivation relates to external rewards, praise and recognition or winning trophies • Concentration is the ability of a sports performer to process information and maintain focus. • A sports performer has to make sense of the information they are presented with and decide on a course of action. If the performer becomes overloaded with information, it can have a negative effect on their performance. • Short Term Effects are those that happen immediately or during the course of one game or event. • Long Term Effects are those that happen over at least a 6 week period, or significantly longer.
Key Information • Arousal is the increased state of readiness of a sports performer in preparation for the performance or activity. • Arousal levels need to be kept at an optimum level to ensure a performer can achieve their best. • If a performer is over aroused they may become anxious, lose concentration or even worse……………… • Anxiety is a negative emotion that performers experience when they are over aroused & feel threatened by the situation a develop a fear of failure. • State Anxiety occurs in response to the situation that the perfomer is in. eg. They have a strong sense of self that can make them feel highly self-conscious around other people, Introverts process their emotions, thoughts, and observations internally
