Types of Reactions • There are 5 types of reactions • Combination • Decomposition • Single-Replacement • Double-Replacement • Combustion • Some fit into more than one category.
Combination Reactions • Definition: Two or more substances reacting to form a single substance • What is a Reactant? • Reactants are substances that react with each other. • Usually it’s two elements or two compounds.
Products • Product: The end result • Multiple products possible when: Nonmetal + Nonmetal Transition Metal + Nonmetal
Metal and Nonmetal Reactants • When a metal and a nonmetal react, the formula is a direct result of the two • Example: 2K+Cl2 ---> 2KCl What would the skeleton equation be if sodium reacted with fluorine? Na + F2 ---> NaF
Nonmetal Oxides and Water • When nonmetal oxides and water react an acid is produced • Example: SO2 + H2O ---> H2SO3(aq)
Metallic Oxides and Water • When a metallic oxide reacts with water the product is a base • Base: A compound that contains hydroxide ions • Example: CaO + H2O ---> Ca(OH)2(aq)
Questions Complete the following combination reactions: Aluminum + Oxygen---> ? Answer: Al2O3 Copper (II) + Sulfur ---> ? Answer: CuS
Homework • Write balanced chemical equations for the following chemical reactions: • Magnesium + Fluorine ---> ? • Lithium + Bromine ---> ?
