Life Cycles of Plants Science: Grades 4 and 5 October 8, 2010
Key Words • Life Cycle all the stages of a living thing (birth to death) • Germinate to sprout • Pollen powdery material made by flowers • Life span the amount of time it lives • Cones what some plants produce (instead of flowers) • Spore a plant cell that can grow into a new plant. • Bud a plant part that grows into a new stem, leaf, or flower MS. SORIA
Life Cycle • Every plant goes through a set of stages from the beginning of its life to the end. • Plants grow and change in different ways. • Think of some ways plants are different from one another. HINT: think about plants that we could eat and plants that grow in the park.
Growing from Seeds • When a new plant starts growing from a seed, a new life cycle begins. • Most plants reproduce by making seeds. • A seed contains stored food. • The food helps the new plant grow when the seed germinates. • The new plant grows roots, a stem, and leaves. • When the plant is an adult, it develops flowers. • Then the plant is ready to reproduce.
Growing from Seeds • Flowers produce pollen. • With the help of bees and other insects, pollen spreads from one flower to another. • When flowers receive pollen, seeds form in parts of the flower called ovaries. • A fruit is a ripened ovary. • New plants grow from some of the seeds.
Plant Life Cycle What is happening at each stage?
Pine trees produce cones instead of flowers • There are male and female cones • The male cones contain pollen. • The wind and even animals can carry pollen to the female cones for reproduction. Seeds form in the female and life begins again. • Some plants produce spores instead of seeds • Mosses and ferns use spores to reproduce • Each kind of living thing has its own life span • Some plants complete their life cycles in only one year. • Some trees live for many years
Growing from the Parent Plant • Some plants can grow either from seeds or from part of the parent plant. • Ex: a potato can grow from seeds or from a bud
Discussion Question • People who are allergic to pollen can have allergy problems in the spring, summer or fall. What do you think that tells you about the life cycle of plants in the area?
