Direct Development • Many organisms change as they grow. But some do not change their appearance drastically. They keep their same body shape but it may grow larger or wider. • This kind of growth development is called direct development. It is called that because the growth is linear or direct.
Incomplete Metamorphosis • Some animals, especially insects, have one kind of body when they are born and then another when they are an adult. • The changes that occur during this development of growth is called metamorphosis. • Some insects go through incomplete metamorphosis.
Incomplete metamorphosis is when an insect goes through 3 stages of development. • Stage 1- egg • Stage 2- nymph • Stage 3- adult • Draw each stage, p. A73.
Complete Metamorphosis • Animals whose bodies take on multiple changes or change drastically are said to go through complete metamorphosis. • A beetle is an example of an animal who goes through complete metamorphosis. • Complete metamorphosis has 4 stages. They are egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
During the first stage, the insect develops inside an egg. When it hatches from the egg, it is now beginning the next stage. • Now it is called a larva. A larva does NOT have wings and looks VERY different from its adult form. • During the third stage of complete metamorphosis, the insect can not move or eat. This is when it is in the pupa stage. Most of the time, they are in a cocoon or chrysalis.
The fourth stage is when the insect emerges from the cocoon, and it is now in its adult shape and size.
