The multifunctional role of agriculture • Agriculture is not just planting fields, but it has : - Social & Financial implication - Economic growth - Environment repercussions • Agriculture occupies 1/3 of the Earth’s land; and is the central activity for much of the world's population. • Rural activity is in close contact with nature, add value to renewable resources, but is vulnerable to overexploitation and improper management (food security, climate change).
AGRICULTURE IN NUMBERS • 4,9 Blns hectares (1,5 agricultural based; 3.4 breeders and pasture) • Rural population 3.4 blns(49% of the earth) • 1.3 blns are farmers (almost 1/5 of the earth population) • 40% of the world GDP (contribution of farmers)
