Organic Molecules Organic Molecules contain carbon and can form very large molecules They can form 4 covalent bonds….do you remember what they are??? They can form long chains, branched chains, and rings They can form single, double, or triple bonds Most often bonds to H, O, or N
Bonding with H, O, N The number of covalent bonds an element can make depends on the number of valence e- N can form 3 covalent bonds Oxygen can form 2 covalent bonds Hydrogen can form 1 covalent bond
Properties of Organic Molecules They have low melting and low boiling points (ex. alcohols) They do NOT conduct electricity They usually do NOT dissolve in water (ex. oil)
Hydrocarbons Just like their name implies, they contain only hydrogen and carbon They are named by how many carbons there are: meth = 1 but = 4 hept = 7 eth = 2 pent = 5 oct = 8 prop = 3 hex = 6 non = 9 dec = 10
