International Repetitive Strain Injury Awareness Day February 28th 2014
Goals of RSI Day To highlight: • the causes of RSI • the need to eliminate those causes • the importance of fair compensation for workers disabled by RSI.
What is an RSI? • RSI is broad term for injuries to: • muscles, • tendons, • ligaments, • joints, • nerves, • blood vessels, • or related soft tissue
Causes of RSI include • Repetitive tasks • Using force • Compression (pressing against hard surfaces) • Awkward postures • Static postures
Activities with risk factors for RSI include: • High volume immunization clinics • Repetitive static positions (e.g. endoscopy) • Repetitive movements (e.g. opening OR packages) • Patient handling tasks • Programming dialysis equipment and securing leur locks • Extensive key boarding
2013 BCNU Online RSI Survey • Over 90% experienced RSI in their career. • The majority reported that a work activity contributed to their discomfort: • patient handling or patient care tasks; • keyboarding; • tasks that required pushing, pulling, lifting, lowering or carrying equipment and/or supplies. • Approximately 60% indicated that they knew their workplace policy for reporting RSI or were at least aware of how to find the policy.
The keys to prevention • Identifying and reporting causes of RSI early • Changing the equipment, work practices, and work environment to remove or reduce risk factors.
Make a difference at your workplace • Raise concerns early; report risk factors and symptoms of RSI • Seek immediate medical attention; and report symptoms to your employer and WorkSafeBC • Involve the OH&S steward in your workplace to recommend preventative actions with the Joint OHS Committee
